More than 2,500 women competed in The Big West during the 2022-23 year, with the conference producing numerous teams in the postseason as well as regional and national honors for student-athletes. Historically, The Big West has been at the forefront of women in sports. In 1983, the league, then known as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA), became the first conference west of the Rockies to introduce women's athletic programs, allowing its female student-athletes to compete at the same level as their male counterparts. Currently, The Big West sponsors 10 women's sports (basketball, beach volleyball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, outdoor track & field, volleyball and water polo).
