RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Oct. 29, 2022) -- The 2022 Big West Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships were highlighted by Cal Poly taking both men’s and women’s team titles. The event was hosted by UC Riverside at its Agricultural Operations Cross Country Course.
In the women’s 6K, Brianna Weidler of UC Davis crossed the finish line in 19:28.6 to take the women’s individual crown. Long Beach State’s Allie Scimia was the runner-up at 19:49.0. Cal Poly’s Julia Heckey rounded out the top three at 19:50.2.
As a team, the Mustang women edged out UC Irvine by one point, 63-64. It is Cal Poly’s eighth team title on the women’s side and first since 2018.
Although the Mustangs only had one top-10 finisher in Heckey, they were able to put all their scorers in the top 20 with Sydnie Rivas (12th/20:34.5), Tatiana Cornejo (14th/20:41.3), Misty Diax (15th/20:44.7) and Carissa Bucholz (19th/20:52.8). The Anteaters were led by a 5-6-7 finish from Anna Vogtmann (19:52.8), Sameen Andar (19:57.6) and Hannah Chau (20:01.0). UC Davis placed third, led by Weidler's victory and Sierra Atkins’ fourth place finish of 19:50.3. Cal State Fullerton's McKaylie Caesar (20:05.3), Long Beach State's Ryley Fick (20:13.2) and UC Riverside's Collette Lowengrub (20:18.0) were eighth through 10th, respectively.
Cal Poly’s Jake Ritter became the conference’s only three-time individual champion with a time of 23:27.4 and also set a new meet record, breaking Cal State Fullerton's Sam Ayala's time of 23:34.5 last year. Ritter previously won the 2018 and 2019 editions of The Big West Championship. William Fallini-Haas (23:41.9) and Aidan McCarthy (23:46.4) were second and third, respectively, for a Mustang sweep of the top three.
Cal Poly took their record 18th team title with all five scorers in the top 10, dominating the competition with a mere 22 points, 45 ahead of second-place UC Santa Barbara (67). Anthony Guerra (sixth/23:53.3) and John Bennet (10th/24:02.9) were Cal Poly's final two scorers in the top-10. UC Santa Barbara was led by the 4-9 finish of Ethan Godsey (23:47.1) and Augustus Marshall (24:02.7). UC Riverside was third with 70 points, paced by Aiden Davis' seventh place finish with a time of 24:02.6.
