No. 1 Seed Hawai'i and No. 2 Seed Cal Poly Secure Spots in 2023 Big West Women's Tennis Championship Final

SAN DIEGO (April 28, 2023) -- No. 1 seed Hawai'i blanked No. 4 seed Long Beach State 4-0 in the semifinals of the 2023 Big West Women’s Tennis Championship, Friday at Barnes Tennis Center. 
 
The Rainbow Wahine (13-7) advance to the championship match to take on No. 2 seed Cal Poly. The Beach end their season with an 11-10 record. 

Hawai'i was able to take the doubles point in comeback fashion. After Long Beach State's Sheena Masuda and Justine Dondonay downed Klara Novakova and Rita Pinto 6-2 in the top flight, Hawai'i earned a pair of 6-4 wins in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles as Ana Vilcek and Nikola Homolkova topped Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedt, and Satsuki Takamura and Madison Kim bested Mathilde Tranberg and Hana Becirovic Novak. 

The Raibow Wahine dominated the rest of the way. Takamura defeated Cook 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 slot, and Kim took down Dondonay in the No. 6 hole 6-1, 6-1. Vilcek clinched the victory for Hawai'i with a 6-0, 6-4 win in the No. 1 spot.

SAN DIEGO (April 28, 2023) -- No. 2 seed Cal Poly swept No. 6 seed CSUN 4-0 in the semifinals of the 2023 Big West Women’s Tennis Championship, Friday at Barnes Tennis Center. 
 
The Mustangs (14-8) advance to the championship match to take on top-seeded Hawai'i. The Matadors end their season with an 17-6 record. 

Cal Poly took the doubles point in dramatic fashion, with two going into tiebreak. After the CSUN duo of Cindy Ung and Vitoria Solis Urdiales topped Melissa LaMette and Alexandra Ozerets 6-2 in the No. 3 slot, the Mustangs' Delanie Dunkle and Peyton Dunkle defeated Jolene Coetzee and Angela Ho 7-6 (3) in the top draw. Kim Bhunu and Kennedy Buntrock clinched it for Cal Poly with a 7-6 (5) triumph over Sasha Turchak and Yuliia Zhytelna in No. 2 doubles. 

Delanie Dunkle bested Emma Mortalla Sanz 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 4 hole and Buntrock topped Ho 6-2, 7-5 in the No.5 spot to give the Mustangs a commanding 3-0 lead. 

With all four remaining singles matches in the third set, Ozerets was the deciding point with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 comeback win over Tallia Harper in No. 6 singles for the clinch.
