The Big West Reveals Winners of 2023 Track & Field Major Awards

IRVINE, Calif. -- The Big West is proud to announce its 2023 Track & Field Major Award winners.
 
Cal State Fullerton sophomore John Clifford and Cal Poly redshirt sophomore Aidan McCarthy are The Big West Men’s Co-Track Athletes of the Year. Long Beach State senior Sebastian Coleman will take home The Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Year honor. CSUN’s Logan Davis wins The Big West Men’s Freshman of the Year award. Titan head coach Marques Barosso is The Big West Men’s Coach of the Year.
 
Long Beach State senior Ryley Fick will be honored as The Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Year for the second straight year. UC Irvine sophomore Jolie Robinson is The Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Year. Long Beach State's Alex Heerink-van Breda wins The Big West Women's Freshman of the Year accolade. Beach director of track & field Andy Sythe is The Big West Women's Coach of the Year. 
 
Clifford made it on the podium twice at The Big West Championships, winning the 100 (10.26) and coming in second in the 200 (20.96) to help the Titans to the team title. The sophomore qualified for regionals with a seasonal-best mark of 10.26. McCarthy won the 800 at the conference meet, crossing the finish line in 1:47.14, and qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries in the 800 and 1500 with a seasonal-best time of 1:47.14 and 3:39.56, respectively.
 
Coleman was a double event winner in the discus (59.35m/194’9”) and hammer throw (64.74m/212’5”) competitions at The Big West Championships. The senior’s seasonal-best marks rank first in the league in three events, the shot put (17.58m/57’8.25”), discus (59.35m/194’9”) and hammer throw (64.74m/212’5”), and qualified for regionals in the latter two.
 
Davis won the 400 title (46.55) and helped the 4x100 relay team finish second (39.76) at The Big West Championships. Davis is a member of the CSUN 4x100 relay squad that qualified for the regional meet with a seasonal-best mark of 39.68.
 
Barosso helmed the Titans to their third straight conference title. Cal State Fullerton had nine qualifiers for the NCAA West Preliminaries in Clifford (100), Abel Jordan (110H), Carter Birade (110H), Christian Wood (LJ), Daniel Palacio (PV), Ernesto Collazo (PV), Matthew Uballe (110H), Reyte Rash (400H) and Samuel Heinrichs (PV). It is the second-year head coach’s second Coach of the Year honor.
 
Fick will be honored as the Big West Track Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row. The senior was named Track Athlete of the Meet for the second consecutive year at the Big West Championships with a double event win in the 800 (2:08.45) and 3000 steeplechase (10:14.49), and qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries in both events with a seasonal-best times of 2:07.40 and 10:12.84, respectively.
 
Robinson went on the podium twice at the conference meet, winning the heptathlon (5343) and coming in second in the long jump (5.96m/19’6.75”). The sophomore ranks in the conference top 10 in four events, heptathlon (5343), long jump (5.97m/197’7”), javelin (42.63m/139’10”) and high jump (1.65m/5’5”).
 
Heerink-van Breda won the 400 hurdles (58.78) and was part of the 4x400 team that finished second at The Big West Championships. The freshman qualified for the regional meet in the 400 hurdles with a seasonal-best time of 58.78.
 
Sythe led the Beach to win their second straight and third overall conference crown. Long Beach State had seven qualifiers for the regional meet with Fick (800, 3000SC), Heerink-van Breda (400H), Hailey Fune’ (100H), Kaitlyn Williams (100), Rahni Turner (100H) and Rori Denness-Lamont (JT). It is Sythe's third Women's Coach of the Year honor.
