Titan Men Claim Third Consecutive Title, Beach Women Win Second Straight Crown at 2023 Big West Track & Field Championships

FULLERTON, Calif. -- The Cal State Fullerton men and Long Beach State women won the team titles at the 2023 Big West Track & Field Championships, Saturday at Titan Track & Field Complex on the campus of Cal State Fullerton.
 
Men’s Recap
The Titan men won by scoring 184.5 points, starting the day with 55.5 points. Cal State Fullerton has now won three team titles in a row and five of the last six, dating back to 2017 (The Big West Championships was not held in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic). Long Beach State was a close second with 182.5 points and Cal Poly, coming in with 74 points, was third with 152 points.
 
 
Cal State Fullerton’s John Clifford is The Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet after coming in first (10.26) in the 100 and second (20.98) in the 200. Long Beach State’s Sebastian Coleman is The Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Meet after a double win in the discus (59.35m/194’8”) and hammer throw (64.64m/212’1”).
 
After 20 out of 21 events, Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State each had 174.5 points. The Titan 4x400 relay team (3:10.35) edged the Beach (3:10.37) by .02 to win the race, and subsequently the team title. UC Santa Barbara (3:12.99) was third.
 
Long Beach State won the 4x100 relay with a time of 39.71, followed by CSUN (39.76) and Cal Poly (41.23). The Beach then went 1-2-7 in the men’s 1500 to score 20 points with Michael Phillips (3:49.99) and Cristian Martinez (3:50.77) taking the first two spots. Cal Poly’s Spencer Pickren (3:51.15) took third.  
 
Cal State Fullerton started making up some ground in the team competition, first by taking all three podium spots in the men’s 110 hurdles with Matthew Uballe (13.71), Carter Birade (13.88) and Abel Jordan (13.99) for 24 points. The Titans then scored 19 points in the 400 going 2-3-4 with Isaiah Emerson (46.99) and Christopher Goode (47.44) getting silver and bronze, respectively. CSUN’s Logan Davis won the race in 46.55.
 
Cal State Fullerton’s John Clifford won the 100 in 10.26 and added 10 more points to the Titans’ total. Long Beach State’s Tristyn Flores (10.30) and CSUN’s David Phillips (10.38) earned silver and bronze, respectively.
 
Cal Poly’s Aidan McCarthy won the 800 with a time of 1:47.14, edging out Long Beach State’s Kash Powell (1:47.71) and UC Riverside’s Andrew Jackson (1:50.02).
 
The Titans got 21 points in the 400 hurdles with Cal State Fullerton’s Reyte Rash (50.95) topping the field, Long Beach State’s Caleb Roberson (51.11) in second and Cal State Fullerton’s Matt Cohen (53.17) in third.
 
Long Beach State’s Mekhi Mays (20.85) topped Cal State Fullerton’s John Clifford (20.98) in the 200, and Michael Phillips (14:51.93) took second for the Beach in the 5000 to set up the winner-take-all 4x400 relay. Ethan Godsey won the 5000, crossing the finish line in 14:51.12. Cal Poly’s Rory Smail was third in 14:52.34.
 
CSUN’s Bryson Williams won the triple jump with a mark of 15.15m/49’8.5”. The duo of Novye’ James (14.95m/49’0.75”) and Elijah Harris (14.91m/48’11”) took second and third, respectively, for 14 crucial points for the Beach.
 
In the high jump, UC Santa Barbara’s Leon Gillis cleared 2.14m/7’0.25” for the win, followed by Cal State Fullerton’s Camren Willis (2.06m/6’9”) and Cal Poly’s Kevin Schmitt (2.06m/6’9”). Willis topped Schmitt in attempts to break the tie.
 
Liam Miksic of UC Irvine won the javelin with a throw of 64.23m/210’8” UC Santa Barbara’s Brad Thomas (63.66m/208’10”) took silver and Cal Poly’s Baxter Kitteringham (62.14m/203’10”) claimed bronze.  
 
In the shot put, Cal State Fullerton’s Hawkin Miller (57.42m/57’2”) took first, followed by CSU Bakersfield’s Thomas Richardson (17.18m/46’4.5”) and CSUN’s Guillermo Lopez (17.09m/56’1”).

Women’s Recap
The Beach women scored 149 points to win the team title for the second time in a row and third overall. Cal Poly was second with 117.33 points and Hawai’i was third with 102. Long Beach State started off the day in pole position with 52.5 points.
 
For the second consecutive year the Beach’s Ryley Fick was named The Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet. Fick is now a two-time double champion the 3000 steeplechase (10:14.49) and 800 (2:08.45). UC Irvine’s Jolie Robinson claimed The Big West Field Athlete of the Meet award winning the heptathlon (5343), second in the long jump (5.96m/19’6.75”) and seventh in the javelin (40.62m/133’3”).
 
CSUN won the 4x100 relay with a time of 45.33, edging out Cal Poly (45.39) and Long Beach State (45.41).
 
After winning the 10000 last year, UC Riverside’s Linda Perez is now a two-time Big West champion, this time in the 1500, crossing the finish line in 4:25.63. Cal Poly’s Tatiana Cornejo (4:28.05) and UC Davis’ Maddie Kackley (4:28.54) took second and third, respectively.
 
The Beach went 1-2-3-7 in the 100 hurdles for 26 points with Rahni Turner (13.30), Hailey Fune’ (13.61) and Tayah DeSousa (13.79) getting the podium sweep.
 
In the 400, CSU Bakersfield’s Kynnedi McCall (54.15), UC Riverside’s Saniyah Starks (55.07) and UC Santa Barbara’s Mariana Lanz (55.27) claimed the top three spots.
 
In the 100, Cal State Fullerton’s Trinity Barnett (11.49) came in first, followed by CSUN’s Arianna Alexander (11.58) and Long Beach State’s Kaitlyn Williams (11.61).
 
Long Beach State racked up two wins in back-to-back events as Ryley Fick (2:08.45) won the 800 and Alex Heerink-van Breda (58.78) taking gold in the 400 hurdles. Cal Poly’s Misty Diaz (2:09.07) and UC Irvine’s Malia Gay (2:09.32) took silver and bronze, respectively in the 800. In the 400 hurdles, CSU Bakersfield’s Riley Slayton was second (1:00.17) and UC Santa Barbara’s Maddie Conte (1:00.75) was third.
 
Alyssa Mae Antolin of Hawai’i is now a back-to-back Big West champion in the 200 with a time of 23.44. Cal Poly’s Shelby Daniele (23.73) and UC Riverside’s Raykiyat Olujoku (23.73) got second and third, respectively.
 
The UC Davis duo of Brianna Weidler (16:09.74) and Sierra Atkins (16:16.45) took the top two spots in the women’s 5000. Both went under the previous meet record of 16:25 set by Laura Hollander of Cal Poly in 2013. UC Irvine’s Sameen Andar, the 10000 champion, was third in 16:28.44.
 
The 4x400 relay closed out the meet with UC Riverside (30:48.87) edging out Long Beach State (3:41.54) and Hawai’i (3:45.36).
 
UC Santa Barbara’s Malia Benson (50.08m/164’3”) won the javelin, followed by Long Beach State’s Rori Dennes-Lamont (47.60m/156’2”) and Lilian Turban of Hawai’i (45.18m/148’2”).
 
CSU Bakersfield’s Miranda Miller is now a two-time Big West pole vault champion after clearing 4.05m/13’3.5”. Cal Poly’s Lexi Evans and Annie Hatzenbeler each 3.90m/12’9.5” for second and third, respectively. Evans edged out Hatzenbeler on attempts.
 
Hawai’i took the top two spots in the triple jump with Tara Wyllie (12.50m/41’0.25”) and Caitlin Simmons (12.49m/40’11.75”). UC Santa Barbara’s Kennedy Johnson (12.44m/40’9.75”) was third.
 
UC Riverside’s Shiloh Corrales-Nelson topped the shot put field with a throw of 15.94m/52’3.75”. UC Irvine’s Deandra Tyler (15.21m/49’11”) was second and Long Beach State’s Malia Talavou (14.73m/48’4”) took third.
