UH Handles Business in Six Events to Highlight Day 2 of Championships

HOUSTON, Texas — Hawai'i had a total of six first place finishes between both men's and women's teams out of 10 events during Day 2 of The Big West Swimming & Diving Championships at the CRWC Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston.   

Brandon Shephard brought home the first gold medal of the day for the Rainbow Warriors after posting a 323.65 in the men's 3M Diving event. 

The 500-freestyle featured a sweep by UC Santa Barabra when Owen Berry came away with the gold medal on the men's side with a time of 4:23.76 as teammate Samantha Banos boasted a gold medal of the junior's own after clocking a time of 4:46.32 to break the Big West record.  

Up next was the 50-freestyle segment that saw Karol Ostotrowski reach the success of first place in an individual event after breaking a Big West record with a time of 19.28. Holly Nelson, also of Hawai'i, handled business as well in the same event clinching the 50-free with a 22.57 mark. 

Hawai'i brought out the brooms once more in the 200-freestyle relay with Ostrowski, Dieter Meyer, Jordan Meacham, and Edward Stoddard on the men's relay and Zofia Tyminska, Alexa Ozment, Eva Kovaluk, and Holly Nelson all honored in gold.  

Following the completion of Day 2, Hawai'i holds a steady lead in first place with 326 points while UC San Diego remains atop the women's side with 260 points. 

Day 3 of the 2025 Big West Swimming & Diving Championships will begin with preliminary competition starting at 10 a.m. CT/8 a.m. PT followed by the first championship final in the 100 Fly beginning approximately at 6 p.m. CT/4 p.m. PT.
