FAYETTEVILLE -- The Big West produced nine national qualifiers on the third day of the 2026 NCAA Track & Field West Preliminaries, Friday at Arkansas’ John McDonnell Field.
The third day of the West Preliminaries is treated as the quarterfinals of the national championships for men's events. Women's events will be run on Saturday in the same format. On Friday, the competition was narrowed to 12 athletes (or relay teams) in each event that move on to the NCAA Track & Field Championships in approximately two weeks at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
The Big West had nine qualifiers to the NCAA Championships.
Cal State Fullerton’s
Ian Dossman earned a trip to Eugene in three events, while
Abel Jordan is going for two.
Dossman had the fastest time on the day in the 200m, winning heat one and coming in first overall with a personal-best time of 20.15. In the 100m, Jordan (10.10) and Dossman (10.20) came in sixth and 12th overall, respectively, to qualify for nationals. CSUN’s
James Crawford (10.21) narrowly missed the cut, coming in 14th overall.
Both the Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State 4x100m relay teams are moving onto the national meet. The Titan squad comprised of
Isaiah Emerson, Jordan,
Dominic Gates, Dossman set a new school record and tied the conference record with a time of 38.93 to come in third place in heat three, fifth overall. The Beach contingent of
Dre’londe Johnson,
Tristyn Flores,
Vincent Jones and
Trey Sheron placed third in heat two, ninth overall, to advance.
The Cal Poly 1500m duo of
Chris Caudillo (3:38.06) and
Carson Smith (3:45.36) each nabbed NCAA qualifiers by finishing in the top five of their respective heats and were fourth and 15th overall, respectively. Fellow Mustang
Aidan McCarthy (3:49.33) was 23rd.
CSUN’s
Kyriaun Davis booked a ticket to Eugene in the men’s discus with a mark of 57.29m/187’11” to come in 11th place overall. UC Irvine’s
Joseph Duggan (53.10m/174’2”), UC San Diego’s
Zach Lewis (52.84m/173’4”) and CSUN’s
Isaiah Butler (52.11m/170’11”) came in 32nd, 35th and 37th, respectively, in the event.
UC Santa Barbara’s
Finn Andrews earned a nationals berth in the men’s 400m hurdles, running a personal-best time of 49.78 to finish eighth overall. UC Santa Barbara’s
Mac Lamkin (50.55) and Long Beach State’s
Jaden Dasher (50.92) took 17th and 19th overall, respectively, in the race.
In the 3000m steeplechase, The Cal Poly trio of
Michael Chambers (8:39.89),
Bryce Kueker (8:45.21) and
Dheeraj Gurusamy (8:59.20) placed 14th, 18th and 33rd overall, respectively.
The Cal State Fullerton 4x400m relay of
Rider Cooper,
Maleik Pabon, Emerson and
Christopher Goode clocked a time of 3:06.15 to come in 17th overall.
UC Irvine’s
Kenechukwu Okonkwo (15.52m/50’11”), Cal State Fullerton’s
Camren Smith (15.49m/50’10”), UC Riverside’s
Andrew Robinson (14.87m/48’9.5”) and UC San Diego’s
Marcus Harris (14.71m/48’3.25”) claimed 21st, 22nd, 39th and 41st, respectively, in the men’s triple jump. CSUN’s
Jay Louison-Roe did not record a mark.
In the men’s high jump, UC Riverside’s
Kazu Kimura, UC San Diego’s
Miles Bennett and Cal State Fullerton’s
Sebastian Ikolo all cleared a height of 2.07m/6’9.5”, but finished 24th, 31st and 39th, respectively, based on number of attempts.
