IRVINE, Calif. -- Long Beach State’s
Ryan Gregory and UC Irvine’s
Joy Anderson came out as winners in the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, to close out the combined events weekend of the 2026 Big West Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Championships, Saturday at UC Irvine’s Anteater Stadium.
The main weekend of the championships will take place May 15-16 at Long Beach State’s Jack Rose Track.
Decathlon
Gregory won the decathlon competition with 7816 points. Cal State Fullerton’s Keith Orona took silver with 7676 points and UC Santa Barbara’s Hudson Shave placed third with 7413 points.
Day two started with Gregory, last year’s runner-up in the event, in first with 4079 points, Keith Orona with 3976 points and Shaver with 3826 points. Gregory claimed wins in the 110m hurdles, pole vault and 1500m on the day and combined with day one results had the best mark or time in seven of the decathlon’s 10 events. Keith Orona won the two throwing events of the day, the discus and javelin.
The competition got started with the 110m hurdles competition and Gregory had the fastest time at 14.76 for 879 points. Shaver (14.98/852 points) was second and Cal State Fullerton’s Solomon Gater (15.19/827 points) was third.
Keith Orona took the lead from Gregory after the discus with a toss of 46.71m/153’3” for 802 points to total 5560 points. Gregory had 5555 points after the discus to sit in second in the overall competition. Shaver was second in the discus throw at 45.22m/148’4” and Cal State Fullerton’s
Dominic Tubbs was third at 41.64m/136’7”.
Gregory took back pole position after having the highest clearance in the pole vault by three progressions at 4.71m/15’5.5” for 822 points. Shaver (4.41m/14’5.5”/734 points) and Keith Orona (4.31m/14’1.75”/705 points) were second and third, respectively.
Keith Orona closed the gap with an event win in the javelin with a throw of 60.39m/198’1” for 744 points. Long Beach State’s
Milo Orona (60.11m/197’2”/739 points) and Gregory (54.90m/180’1”) had the second and third farthest tosses, respectively.
Entering the final event, the 1500m, Gregory led with 7038 points, followed by Keith Orona with 7009 and Hudson Shaver with 6801. Gregory claimed a seventh event victory, finishing the 3.75-lap race in 4:25.03. Tubbs (4:42.17) and Keith Orona (4:42.27) finished second and third in the event, respectively.
With Gregory’s win and Milo Orona’s fourth-place finish, Long Beach State leads the men’s team competition with 15 points, followed by Cal State Fullerton with 12 points. UC Santa Barbara is in third with six points.
Heptathlon
Anderson won the seven-event competition with 5740 points, a new school record. Fellow Anteaters took second through fourth with
Jolie Robinson (5647),
Jazzmine Davis (5532) and
Zharia Taylor (5384).
Anderson came into the day in the lead with 3478 points, followed by Davis at 3380 points and Taylor with 3287 points.
Robinson had the furthest mark in the long jump at 6.14m/20’1.75” for 893 points. Davis was second at 5.82m/19’1.25” for 795 points and UC Santa Barbara’s
Jessica Mackenzie was third with a jump of 5.80m/19’0.5” for 789 points. Anderson still led after the horizontal jump competition with 4181 points, but right behind was teammates Davis (4175) and Robinson (4167).
Robinson took over the lead after the javelin throw with a mark of 41.55m/136’4” for 697 points.
Maya Holman of Hawai‘i (40.77m/133’9”/682 points) and Mackenzie (40.34m/132’4”/674 points) were second and third in the event, respectively.
In the final heptathlon event of the day, the 800m,
Catherine Touchette of Hawai’i (2:08.23) crossed the finish line first, but right behind was Anderson at 2:10.94. Cal State Fullerton’s
Olivia Walker was third in 2:18.29. Anderson’s 800m time equaled to 951 points for a total of 5740 for the win.
With the top four heptathletes, UC Irvine leads the women’s team competition with 29 points, followed by UC Santa Barbara with six points. Hawai’i is in third with three points.
