Day Two of NCAA Track & Field West Preliminaries Highlighted by Three Big West Advancements

 Three Big West athletes advanced out of their heats on the second day of the 2025 NCAA Track & Field West Preliminaries, Thursday at Texas A&M’s E.B. Cushing Stadium.
 
The second day of the West Preliminaries is treated as the first round of the national championships for women’s events, mirroring the men's format on Wednesday. For track events, the competition is narrowed down to 24 athletes that qualify for Saturday’s national quarterfinal. For the field events, the top 12 advance to the national meet in two weeks in Eugene, Ore.
 
The Big West had three athletes advance out of their respective first round track events.
 
Long Beach State’s Rahni Turner is moving on to Saturday’s quarterfinal in the 100m hurdles, winning heat four with a time of 13.15, tied for eighth overall. Fellow Beach hurdler Claudine Raud-Gumiel (13.44) was one spot shy from advancing with a 25th place finish. UC Irvine’s Jazzmine Davis (35th; 13.53) and UC Santa Barbara’s Maddie Conte (40th; 13.69) also competed in the event.
 
Davis did qualify for Saturday in a different event, the 400m hurdles, grabbing the final spot with a 24th place overall finish at 58.66. Long Beach State’s Sofia Lavreshina (26th; 58.78), UC Irvine’s Esmeray Demirbas (29th; 58.96), UC Santa Barbara’s Conte (30th; 59.09), UC San Diego’s Amari Jenkins (36th; 59.47) and Cal State Fullerton’s Alyssa Heinlein (45th; 1:01.43) were also competitors in the 400m hurdles.
 
UC Irvine’s Malia Gay advanced out of the prelims in the 800m, finishing third in heat five, 18th overall, with a personal-best time of 2:05.72. Hawa ‘i’s Lucy Milliner (2:06.41) and UC Irvine’s Luz Mercado (2:09.16) placed 26th and 37th, respectively, in the two-lap race.  
 
 In the 100m, Cal State Fullerton’s Brooklyn Davis (11.64), Long Beach State’s Trinity Barnett (11.66) and Cal State Bakersfield’s Makiah Parker (11.71) had the 43rd, 44th and 46th fastest times, respectively. Big West athletes that competed in the 200m were Cal State Fullerton’s Ashley Odiase (29th; 23.54), UC Riverside’s Raykiyat Olukoju (43rd, 24.08), Long Beach State’s Barnett (45th; 24.29) and Cal State Bakersfield’s Parker (46th; 24.74).
 
UC Santa Barbara’s Mia Shepard (53.62), UC Davis’ Maya Shinnick (53.76) and CSUN’s Jasmine Haskell (54.05) were the 33rd, 35th and 38th place finishers, respectively, in the 400m.
 
CSUN’s Summer Mosley (57.92m/190’0”) and UC Irvine’s Deana Davis (54.30m/178’2”) placed 25th and 42nd, respectively, in the hammer throw.
 
Hawai‘i’s Lilian Turban (43.30m/142’1”) finished 40th in the javelin.
 
UC Irvine long jumping trio of Kailah McKenzie (6.05m/19’10.25”), Jolie Robinson (5.78m/18’11.75”) and Reyna Johnson (5.77m/18’11.25”) took 32nd, 42nd and 44th, respectively. UC San Diego’s Tamara Aimufia (5.82m/19’1.25”) was also in the event, placing 41st.
 
In the pole vault, Cal Poly’s Lexi Evans cleared 4.17m/13’8.25” for 17th. Helen Hoadley (4.02m/13’2.25”) of Hawai‘i tied for 34th.
 
UC San Diego’s Feyi Olukanni (14.55m/47’9”) and UC Irvine’s Nyla Baker (13.90m/45’7.25”) had the 41st and 44th best marks in the shot put.
