Three Tickets to Eugene Claimed on First Day of NCAA Track & Field West Regionals

The Big West had three student-athletes punch tickets to Eugene on the first day of the 2025 NCAA West Preliminaries, Wednesday at Texas A&M’s E.B. Cushing Stadium.

The first day of the West Preliminaries is treated as the first round of the national meet for men’s events. Women’s events will be run on Thursday with the same format. For the track events, the competition was narrowed down to 24 athletes that qualify for Friday’s regional final (national quarterfinal). For the field events, the top 12 earn trips to the national meet in two weeks in Eugene, Ore.

The Big West had three qualifiers to the NCAA Championships and 11 athletes advance out of the first round.

Cal Poly duo of senior Travis Martin and Rory Devaney earned a trip to the national meet in the men’s hammer throw. Martin was third with a toss of 67.81m/222’5”, while Devaney was 10th with a mark of 65.49m/216’4”. Long Beach State’s Micah Norfles (64.58m/211’10”), Cal State Bakersfield’s Thomas Richardson (62.17m/203’11”), Cal State Bakersfield’s Javier Toro (60.96m/200’0”) and UC Santa Barbara’s Andy Buttrell (58.60m/192’3”) finished 19th, 27th, 36th and 39th, respectively.

UC Irvine’s Liam Miksic is going to Eugene, grabbing the 12th and final spot in the men’s javelin with a toss of 68.57m/224’11”. Cal Poly’s Colby Neron (66.32m/217’7”) and UC Irvine’s Logan Peyton (55.58m/182’4”) placed 18th and 46th in the event, respectively.

Long Beach State’s Tristyn Flores (10.32) placed second in heat two of the 100m to advance to Friday and have a shot at nationals. CSUN’s Chase Mars (10.49), Long Beach State’s Moray Steward (10.52), Cal State Fullerton’s John Clifford (10.54), Cal State Fullerton’s Ian Dossman (10.64) and Cal State Fullerton’s Dominica Gates finished 28th, 29th, 31st, 43rd and 44th, respectively, in the 100m dash.

Flores also made it out in the 200m, coming in ninth place with a 20.61 effort. UC Irvine’s Justin Johnson (20.87) grabbed the final spot to Friday with a 23rd-place finish. CSUN’s Mars (20.94), Cal State Fullerton’s Dossman (20.96), UC Santa Barbara’s Curtis Borden III (21.01), Cal State Fullerton’s Emerson (21.12), UC Santa Barbara’s Justin Steele (21.16) and Cal State Fullerton’s Gates (21.58) placed 24th, 27th, 31st, 37th, 39th and 48th, respectively.

Cal Poly’s Chase Walter is moved out of the first round in the 400m with a personal-best time of 46.04 for 13th place overall. CSUN’s Tibyasa Matovu (46.79) was also in the event with a 34th place showing.

Cal Poly’s Aidan McCarthy (1:47.94) finished second in heat two, eighth overall, to get past the prelims. Cal Poly’s Lewis Westwood (1:51.30) and UC Irvine’s Angel Cordero (1:52.25) were 43rd and 45th in the half-mile event.

Cal Poly’s Chris Caudillo (3:52.50), Spencer Pickren (3:53.94) and Carson Smith (3:57.66) finished 30th, 32nd and 43rd, respectively, in the 1500m.

?Cal State Fullerton’s Joshua Hornsby advanced to Friday’s quarterfinal in the 110m hurdles, finishing second in heat four, 14th overall with a time of 13.61. Fellow Titan Carter Birade (14.25) finished 41st.

UC Santa Barbara’s Finn Andrews (52.05) and Cal State Fullerton’s Donovan Garcia (52.86) placed 39th and 44th overall, respectively,  in the 400m hurdles.

Cal State Fullerton’s Rahsaan Dozier (7.26m/23’10”), CSUN’s Joey Nations (7.23m/23’8.75”), Cal State Fullerton’s Camren Willis (7.10m/23’3.5”) took 28th, 30th and 37th place in the long jump, respectively.

Long Beach State’s Jaylon Wells (17.86m/58’7.25”), Cal State Fullerton’s Hawkin Miller (17.62m/57’9.75”), Cal Poly’s Corban Payne (17.50m/57’5”) and Cal State Fullerton’s Brayden Bitter (16.92m/55’6.25”) were 27th, 36th, 38th and 45th, respectively, in the shot put.

Cal Poly’s Ben Feyrer tied for 26th in the pole vault with a clearance of 5.02m/16’5.5”.
