With the conclusion of its 2025 Track & Field Championships, The Big West is proud to announce this year’s Athletes of the Meet. The award was voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches.
Cal Poly’s
Aidan McCarthy was tabbed as the Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet. McCarthy won double gold in the 800m and 1500m mid-distance events to score 20 points for the championship-winning Mustangs. The Pleasanton, Calif. native broke The Big West Championship meet record in the 1500m with a time of 3:39.35. It was McCarthy’s first conference title in the event. In the 800m, the redshirt junior shattered a Jack Rose Track facility record (1:46.62) en route to claiming a third career Big West title in the event, joining San Jose State’s Mark Schilling (1973-77) as three-time winners. The triumph in the 800 allowed McCarthy to become just the fifth Big West athlete ever to sweep the 800m-1500m.
UC Santa Barbara’s
Brad Thomas was selected as the Men’s Field Athlete of the Meet. The highlight for Thomas came during multis week, breaking the overall conference and meet record in the decathlon with 8,108 points. The La Cueva, N.M. product was first or second in nine of the 10 decathlon events, and had the 84th nationally-ranked throw in the javelin portion of the competition at 64.42m/211’4”. Combined with a fourth-place performance in the javelin throw main weekend (63.48m/208’3”) and helping the 4x400m relay (3:12.7) to a fourth-place finish, Thomas scored a total of 15.25 points for the Gauchos.
UC Irvine’s
Jazzmine Davis was chosen as the Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet. Davis scored a total of 22.75 points for the championship-claiming Anteaters, winning the 400m hurdles (58.14) and placing third in the 100m hurdles (13.42), and helped the 4x100m relay (44.87) and 4x400m relay (3:43.70) to second and sixth place finishes, respectively. The senior also placed fifth in the heptathlon with 5368 points, ranked 46th nationally, winning the 200m (24.45) portion of the event.
Long Beach State’s
Claudine Raud-Gumiel and
Lilian Turban of Hawai’i tied in the voting and will share the Women’s Co-Field Athlete of the Meet honor. Raud-Gumiel won the heptathlon won the heptathlon with the No. 16 score in the country at 5698, and also placed second in the 100m hurdles (13.34) and tied for fourth in the high jump (1.68m/5’6”) for 21.5 points. The Beach graduate transfer won the 100m hurdles portion of the heptathlon with a time of 13.22, which ranks 16th nationally.
Turban won both the high jump (1.81m/5’11.25”) and javelin (46.53m/152’8) competitions, and placed eighth in the shot put (14.41m/47’3.5”) to score 21 points for the Rainbow Wahine. Turban’s efforts on the first day was memorable as the high jump overlapped with the shot put. The Rainbow Wahine from Estonia took a pause in the high jump after clearing 1.78m/5’10”, to for three attempts in the shot put. Turban then came back to the high jump and without any warmup cleared 1.81m/5’11.25” on the first try for the win. It was the Hawai’i senior’s second time winning the high jump. Turban becomes the first athlete to win high jump and javelin in the same year. Sheila Tarr of UNLV won high jump in 1984 and javelin in 1985.
