UC Irvine Holds Narrow Lead After Day 2 of Women's Golf Championships

Day two of the Big West Women's Golf Championships offered plenty of drama, but UC Irvine maintained its lead by the slimmest of margins heading into the final round of play.

Yorba Linda Country Club's 18-hole course saw the Anteaters shoot 295 in the second round, giving them a two-day total of 577 (+1). Leading the way for UCI was Cameron Lee who shot an even par 72, improving on her first round total by two strokes, while first round leader Megan Yang shot a 1-over 73.

One stroke behind the team leaders is Cal Poly, who shot 294 on the day for a two-day total of 578 (+2). An even par 72 by Caroline Cantlay led the way for the Mustangs, while Vanessa Wang (73) and Madi Daniel each shot +1 to help the Mustangs cut down on the Anteater lead.

The best team round of the day belonged to third place UC Davis, who improved nine strokes from their first round showing to finish at 286 on the day. The Aggie total after two days is 581 (+5), putting them well within striking range of the top spot. Hannah Sun and Andrea Gomez Lloret led the UCD charge as they both carded 2-under 70s, while Madison Wood also put in an even par 72. All five Aggie golfers improved on their first round performances led by Lloret's five-stroke improvement.

Long Beach State is in fourth after two rounds (+10, 586), led by Holland Shourds and Angelina Kim carding 1-over 73s in the second round to lead the club. Fifth place belongs to UC Riverside (+22, 598), whose low round of the day belonged to Vanessa Betancourt's 1-under 71. Cal State Fullerton is sixth (+28, 604), with Hawai'i (+29, 605) one stroke behind them in seventh. CSUN (+39, 615) and CSU Bakersfield (+61, 637) round out the standings.

On the individual leaderboard, Yang lost a stroke off her first round lead but still finds herself at the top at 6-under. Cantlay is four strokes off the pace at 2-under, while Sun and Shourds each find themselves in third at 1-under. The biggest jump of the day belonged to Julia Johnson of CSUN, cutting seven strokes off her first round performance to card a 3-under 69. She went from a tie to 26th to a tie for fifth at 1-over along with Lloret and Wang.

The third and final round of the Championships starts at 7:30am with Long Beach State, UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton teeing off on the front nine. At the same time on the back nine, Hawai'i, CSUN and CSU Bakersfield will begin their final rounds. The top three in the standings in UC Irvine, Cal Poly and UC Davis will tee off at 8:20am from hole one.
