Spearheaded by head coach Jason Drotter, Cal State Fullerton was crowned Big West Men’s Golf Co-Champions in just its fourth year of  competition, an impressive feat that earned him 2013 Big West Men’s Golf Coach of the Year accolades.  UC Santa Barbara’s Glen Scher collected 2013 Big West Men’s Golf Player of the Year honors while Daniel Chian received the 2013 Big West Men’s Golf Freshman of the Year award.

In 2009-10, Drotter signed on to coach the Titans’ men’s golf team that was reinstated along with a women’s program at Cal State Fullerton and in just four short years he guided his team to the first conference championship in school history.  Cal State Fullerton and Pacific shared the 2013 Big West Men’s Golf Co-Champions after carding a three-round team score of 887 at the 2013 Big West Men’s Golf Championship at the Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto, Calif. Led by Dakota Duerr’s conference-low 70.7 stroke average, the Titans dominated play over the course of the year, posting nine top-5 finishes, including two team titles and three second place finishes.  This is the first coach of the year honor for Cal State Fullerton.

Scher came on strong towards the end of the season with two career tournament titles and one runner-up finish.  He was the medalist at the Sacramento State Invitational in March and then at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in April.  In winning two tournaments, he became the first Gaucho in more than a decade to do so.  His domination earned him back-to-back Big West Golfer of the Month awards for March and April,   Scher finished eighth at the Big West Conference Championship, notching his sixth straight top-10 finish to close out the regular season.  Earlier this week, Scher learned he was selected to compete in the NCAA Men’s Golf Regional at the Karsten Golf Course on the campus of Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.  He enters the NCAA Regional with a team-leading overall stroke average of 72.65.  This marks the second Big West Men’s Golf Player of the Year honor for UC Santa Barbara with Jeff Wood collecting the Gauchos’ first honor back in 2001.

Chian becomes the second straight Long Beach State athlete to be touted Big West Men’s Golf Freshman of the Year after Xander Schauffele received the award in 2012.  The Covina, Calif., native made an immediate impact on the LBSU men’s golf team, leading the 49ers in 2012-13 with a 74.1 stroke average.  In late March Chian guided LBSU to its second-straight Anteater Invitational team title, and third tournament victory of the season, after finishing in second place, just one stroke behind individual medalist Connor Campbell of Loyola Marymount. He concluded the year tying for eighth at the Big West Conference Men’s Golf Championship after registering a six-over 222.

The All-Big West Teams were also announced and a trio of golfers made the first team for the second time - Cal State Fullerton’s Mark Anguiano, Pacific’ Alex Edfort and UC Davis’ Tyler Raber.  Completing the first-team list were Scher, Duerr and Pacific’s Eric Sugimoto.
