
Competing in its first Big West Men's Golf Championship, the University of Hawai'i finds itself sitting atop the Big West leaderboard after blasting a first-round score of 292 at the Soboba Springs Country Club. Cal State Fullerton (293) finished one stroke back in second and is followed by Long Beach State, who fired 9-over 297.
Pacific is fourth after shooting 298, UC Davis sits fifth at 301 and UC Riverside and Cal Poly are tied for sixth after carding 302. Rounding out the 10-team field are Cal State Northridge (304), UC Santa Barbara (305) and UC Irvine (305).
Hawai'i's Nainoa Calip and Cal State Fullerton's Corey Gard turned in a 3-under 69 on day one, tying for the top spot. Five players find themselves knotted for third place after shooting even-par 72 and four players are tied for eighth with a score of 73.
Overall, Hawai'i has three players ranked in the top 10 - Calip (T1st), Cory Oride (T8th) and David Saka (T8th), while Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge each have a pair sitting among the top.
Round two tees off Monday, April 29 at 7:15 a.m. with No. 9 UC Santa Barbara and No. 10 UC Irvine. No. 7 Cal Poly and No. 8 Cal State Northridge start at 7:55 a.m. and are followed by No. 4 Pacific, No. 5 UC Davis and No. 6 UC Riverside at 8:35 a.m. The top three teams - No. 1 Hawai'i, No. 2 Cal State Fullerton and No. 3 Long Beach State - get underway at 9:25 a.m.
