Cal Poly Concludes Fall Season Hosting Tournament
Cal Poly is set to host the 11th annual Lamkin Grip Cal Poly Women's Invitational golf tournament on Monday, Nov. 7 and Tuesday, Nov. 8 at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, Calif. The field of 11 teams tees off at 8:00 a.m. both days following a practice round Sunday afternoon. Northern Arizona returns to defend its title after carding rounds of 310 and 302 for a 612 total en route to victory over 15 other teams in 2011 on the par-73, 6,215-yard course.
The teams in this year's field, in addition to Cal Poly and Northern Arizona, include Big West Conference foes UC Riverside and Cal State Northridge, along with Weber State, Southern Utah, Grand Canyon, Cal State San Marcos, Cal State Monterey Bay, Santa Clara and Point Loma Nazarene.
UC Davis Women Maintain Top 25 Ranking
UC Davis is tied for 19th in the most currently Golfweek/Sagarin golf ratings after a string of successful performances in October. The Aggies women's program placed seventh and ninth in its first two tournaments and then closed out the month with a team title at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown Oct. 25-26. All five Aggie golfers are averaging is 75.6 or lower, with Demia Runas leading the way with a 73.2 average, and four of the five athletes have posted at least one top 10 finish.
Long Beach State Wins Bill Cullum Invitational
The Long Beach State men's golf team shot a 286 in the final round of the Bill Cullum Invitational in Simi Valley to share the team championship with Arizona State. The Sun Devils carded a 282 to overcome a four-stroke deficit to share the lead with the 49ers. But, due to a two-hour fog delay in the morning at the Wood Ranch Golf Club, a playoff for team and individual champion was not possible. This is the first tournament win for LBSU, since capturing last season's Braveheart Classic in Beaumont.
LBSU completed the two-day, 54-hole tournament at 11-under par 853 as the 49ers and Sun Devils won by a comfortable 13 strokes over third-place Denver and 16 shots over Sacramento State in fourth. Tournament host Cal State Northridge placed 11th at 40-over.
Golfers Sweep to Titles At Firestone Grill Invitational
Mark Anguiano shot even par 213 and Tisha Alyn Abrea carded a 13-over-par 226 Tuesday to lead Cal State Fullerton's men's and women's golf teams to the respective championships of the Firestone Grill Invitational at Monarch Dunes Golf Club on Oct. 2-3 for their first multi-team tournament victories since the programs were reinstated for the 2009-10 seasons.
The men's team score was 861, nine over par, for an overwhelming 18-stroke win over Utah Valley State at 879. Seattle and UC Riverside tied for third at 82. The women's team score was 917, 65-over-par and 4 strokes better than runnerup Seattle. Cal State Northridge was third at 934 followed by host Cal Poly at 939.
UCSB's Boring, LBSU's Zavaleta Named Big West October Golfer Of The Month
UC Santa Barbara's Russell Boring grabbed October's Big West Men's Golfer of the Month, while Noelle Zavaleta earned Big West Women's Golfer of the Month.
Boring, hailing from Westlake Village, Calif., recorded two top 10 finishes last month. He began October tying for 10th place at the Wolf Pack Classic after firing a three-round score of 221. He followed that up with a fifth place finish at the Bill Cullum Invitational after carding a career-best, five-under 211 in the three-round event at the Wood Ranch Country Club in Simi Valley, Calif. Boring's efforts guided the Gauchos to a fourth-place team finish at the annual tournament.
In Long Beach State's first tournament of the month, Price's "Give 'Em Five" Invitational, Zavaleta totaled 229 to tie for 45th, while her team placed fifth. The Lakewood, Calif., native improved on her previous performance with an impressive three-round score of 215 at the Las Vegas Collegiate. Zavaleta opened the tournament firing a career-low 69, which vaulted the senior to her first Top 10 finish of the season and fifth of her career.
