CARLSBAD, Calif. – Big West individual medalist and 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships individual qualifier Steen Zeman opened play with a first-round 4-over 76 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa on Friday.
Zeman finished the day with a birdie on the 571-yard par-5 sixth hole to go along with 13 birdies on the opening day from La Costa to land in a tie for 100th place in the 156-golfer field. Zeman played both the long and short holes at even par on the day, with the 3.00 stroke average on the Par 3s tied for 35th in the field.
Ian Maspat from San Diego and Arizona State’s Connor Williams are tied for the early individual lead, firing off rounds of 6-under 66 at the par-72, 7,528-yard layout. The top of the team standings through the first 18 belongs to UCLA, who compiled an aggregate score of 8-under 280 in the 5-count-4 format.
Saturday’s second round for Zeman is set to begin at 2:02 p.m. from Hole 10, with the graduate student from Oxnard, Calif., paired with Jorge Martin Sampedro of UTRGV and Jacob Lang of Kentucky.
Zeman is guaranteed 54 holes of play before the field is trimmed to the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team. The fourth day of competition will see the individual with the lowest cumulative score after 72 holes crowned the NCAA individual champion and the top eight teams will advance to a single elimination match play bracket, played over the final two days at La Costa.
