The 2010 Big West Men's Golf Championship is ready for competition as the league's nine clubs descend on Mission Viejo Country Club May 3-4 for the 54-hole tournament. The Big West Conference will serve as the host of the Championship as the competition returns to Orange County after a one-year hiatus.
UC Davis comes into the tourney eager to defend what was the first title won by an Aggie squad in their brief Divison I tenure. Last season's individual medalist Austin Graham leads UCD into the tournament with a team-best 71.8 stroke average, while teammates Tyler Raber (73.8) and Tim Honeycutt (74.8) give the Aggies a solid trio in their championship defense. In addition, Brent Booth (75.5) returns to the fray after tying for seventh at 1-under in the 2009 Championship.
After failing in attempt for a three-peat a year ago, UC Irvine aims to reclaim the Big West title. The Anteaters are led by John Chin, who leads the league with a 69.8 stroke average, won Big West Golfer of the Month honors on three consecutive occasions, is ranked #8 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings and #1 in the Golfstat Cup. Aside from Chin, UCI boasts four other golfers who have stroke averages below 75 after competing in at least six tournaments. That quartet is Max Greil (72.8), Jerry He (73.4), Tim Cha (73.7) and Bryan Harris (74.8).
After tying for second a year ago, Pacific is looking for its first Big West title since 1997. The Tigers are led by T.J. Bordeaux (72.9), who finished in a tie for third a year ago at 2-under. The club, which posted three top five finishes this season, also has excellent depth in Patrick Kucich (73.6), Danny Garcia (73.7) Ben Bauch (73.8) and Alex Johnson (73.9).
