MEN'S LIVE STATS WOMEN'S LIVE STATS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP PAGE The first and second rounds of the 2007 Big West Golf Championships at Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. are now complete with both the UC Irvine men and women in the lead.
The men shot a 14-under par 562 to lead by 22 strokes over second place Pacific, which tallied an eight-over par 584. UCI shot a sizzling 16-under par 272 in the first round for the lowest round of the day, giving the Anteaters a 17-shot advantage as they headed into the clubhouse.
Long Beach State senior Brett Lederer and UC Irvine freshman John Chin are men's co-leaders after two rounds. Both players shot 65 in the first round and 70 in the second for a 9-under par 135 total. They lead Cal Poly's Colin Peck, who sits in third at 5-under 139. Peck shot a 69 in the second round.
Pacific shot identical rounds of 292 to land in second place. The Tigers were led by junior Chris Rosenau's 69 and 73 for a 2-under par 142 and fourth place on the individual leaderboard. Senior Thomas Petersson also fired a second round 69 to offset an opening round 74, putting him in a tie for fifth with three other golfers.
Defending Big West men's champion Cal Poly is in third place at 10-over par 586, two shots behind Pacific. Cal State Northridge sits in fourth (587), Long Beach State fifth (590), UC Riverside sixth (591) and UC Santa Barbara seventh (597). All five UC Irvine golfers are in the top 10 entering Tuesday's final round. Tim Cha and Brian Edick mirrored each other at 68-75 (143) for 1-under par. Jay Choe and Sean Shahi shot even par.
The Anteater women are well on their way to a third consecutive Big West Championship after firing a 15-over par 591. UCI leads second place Long Beach State by 27 strokes entering tomorrow's final round, which tees off at 7:30 a.m.
Women's individual leader is UCI freshman Patty Chawalitmetha. She shot a Tijeras Creek course record 66 in the second round in addition to her 73 in the first round. Her 5-under par two round total leads Long Beach State junior Kay Hoey by five shots. Hoey carded a 71 and 73 shoot even par 144.
UCI junior Selanee' Henderson, last year's Big West medalist, is one shot behind Hoey at 1-over par 144.
UC Riverside sophomore Jennifer Bermingham knocked in a hole-in-one on the 142-yard par-3 14th hole during the first round. She is in contention for individual medalist honors at 2-over par 146 after shooting 72 and 74.
Long Beach State's Brenda Chhuor and Beth Holtermann are tied for ninth at 9-over par 153. The 49ers improved on their first round 311 to shoot 307 in the second. UC Riverside sits in third (624), Cal State Northridge is fourth (631) and Cal Poly fifth (638).
The men will start off from the No. 1 tee while the women will begin from the No. 10 tee during tomorrow's final round.
