UC Irvine Tied for Seventh After First Round of NCAA West Regional

UC Irvine is tied for seventh place following first round completion of the NCAA West Regional at the Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. The Anteaters shot a five-under-par 283 and share seventh place with Stanford and Pepperdine. Cal Poly sits in a tie for 18th place after shooting a two-over-par 290. Day two of the regional begins tomorrow morning with the first of five UC Irvine golfers teeing off at 12:12 p.m.

The Anteaters had three golfers shoot under par rounds of golf, led by junior Brian Edick and sophomore Kenny Kim with 3-under rounds of 69. Sophomore Garrett Sapp carded a 2-under round of 70. UCI is only four shots out of second place. Florida is the first round leader with a score of 273, 15-under par.

Cal Poly received a career-best performance from sophomore David Lewinski, who is tied for sixth after his first round 68. Lewinski had six birdies on the par-72, 7,200 yard layout to pace the Mustangs. Sophomore J.J. Scurich recorded a 1-over-par 73 and sophomore Kevin O'Brien had a 74. The Mustangs, who saw Big West Golfer of the Year Travis Bertoni bogey three of the first five holes and finish at 3-over-par 75, are tied with Louisville, New Mexico and San Diego State in 18th place.

Long Beach State junior Ryan Wood, competing as an individual, fired a first round 7-over-par 79.
