First Round of Regional Play Complete in Columbus for Long Beach State Men

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Big West champion Long Beach State men’s golf team currently sits five strokes back from a qualifying position after the first round of action at the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships Regional from the Ohio State University Golf Club on Monday.  

Entering the action ranked 23rd and seeded fourth in the region, LBSU saw a breezy and warm day on the course with temperatures reaching 90 degrees as the team teed off from the 10th hole in the 8 a.m. local/5 a.m. PT start time. The duo of Big West individual medalist Steen Zeman and Championship runner-up Jack Cantlay paced the Beach in the opening 18 turning in rounds of 2-over 73 on the 7,422-yard track. Both Zeman and Cantlay finished the day with three birdies apiece and sit in a tie for 20th on the individual leaderboard.  

Big West Golfer of the Year Alejandro de Castro Piera carded a 4-over 75 with the final counting score of the day belonging to 2025 Big West individual medalist Krishnav Nikhil Chopraa, who finished at 6-over 77.  

As a team, LBSU sits at 14-over 298, knotted with South Carolina in ninth and two strokes behind the tandem of Wright State and California. With the low five teams advancing to compete at the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships final site, LBSU sits five strokes behind Illinois State, who currently occupies fifth and eight shots behind the third-place pair of Florida State and Stanford.  

Along with five teams, the low individual from each region not on a qualifying team also advances to the championship finals, set for Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., from May 29-June 3. 

Tuesday’s second round for the Beach begins at 8:55 a.m. ET/5:55 a.m. PT, again going off the 10th tee, and coupled with golfers from South Florida and Oregon. Regional action will also be streamed live by Babygrande Golf with the link available on each regional live scoring page
