Twelve Individual Champions Crowned; Cal Poly Men, UC Irvine Women in Lead After Day One of 2026 Big West Track & Field Championships

The Cal Poly men’s and UC Irvine women’s track & field teams have the lead after the first day of the 2026 Big West Championships main weekend, Friday at Long Beach State’s Jack Rose Track. Both Mustang men and Anteater women are defending champions.





After seven events, the Cal Poly men lead the team scoring with 72 points, followed by Long Beach State with 47 and Cal State Fullerton with 41. On the women’s side, UC Irvine has pole position with 86.5 points, followed by Cal Poly with 62.5 points and UC San Diego with 25 points after seven events.

12 individual league titles were awarded, four on the track and eight in field events.

The day started with the women’s hammer throw as Cal State Fullerton’s Jocelyn Alexander was crowned champion with a mark of 57.38m/188’3”. Long Beach State’s Giszelle Hrehor (57.36m/188’2”) and UC Irvine’s Deana Davis (56.36m/184’11”) finished second and third, respectively. In the men’s hammer throw Cal Poly’s Travis Martin took the win with a toss of 72.36m/237’5”. Cal State Bakersfield’s Javier Toro (65.66m/215’5”) and CSUN’s Tylor Connelly (63.62m/208’8”) also made it on the podium.

Kylee Davis of UC Davis claimed the women’s long jump title with a leap of 6.26m/20’6.5”. Cal State Fullerton’s Sydney Roquebrun (6.09m/19’11.75”) and UC Riverside’s Chelsea Aninyei (6.08m/19’11.5”) rounded out the top three. Long Beach State’s Steven Evans-Glynn claimed the men’s long jump title with a distance of 7.83m/25’8.25”. UC San Diego’s Jaden Rucker (7.59m/24’11”) and UC Riverside’s Aaron Fruge (7.57m/24’10”) were second and third, respectively.

UC Irvine’s Zharia Taylor and Lilian Turban of Hawai’i both had the top mark in the high jump at 1.78m/5’10”, but Taylor edged out Turban in number of attempts to claim the conference title. Third went to Cal Poly’s Charli Kennedy at 1.75m/5’8.75”. UC Riverside’s Kazu Kimura came away with the win in the men’s high jump with a clearance of 2.12m/6’11.5”. Cal State Fullerton’s Sebastian Ikolo (2.09m/6’10.25”) and UC San Diego’s Miles Bennett (2.04m/6’8.25”) were second and third, respectively.

Cal State Fullerton’s Hawkin Miller won the men’s shot put competition for the second straight year with a toss of 18.32m/60’1.25”. Long Beach State’s Jaylon Wells (18.24m/59’10.25”) and UC San Diego’s Cesar Salazar (17.99m/59’0.25”) finished on the podium as well. UC Irvine’s Nyla Baker took the victory in the women’s shot put with a toss of 15.75m/51’8.25”. UC San Diego’s Feyi Olukanni (14.89m/48’10.25”) and Cal Poly’s Taylor Hofland (14.82m/48’4.5”) finished right behind Baker in 2-3, respectively.

Cal Poly swept the top three spots both the men’s 3000m steeplechase and men’s 10000m races. In the men’s steeplechase, Bryce Kueker ran a meet record time of 8:39.21, followed by Michael Chambers (8:46.40) and Dheeraj Gurusamy (8:47.60) for 24 points. The Mustang men picked up 33 points in the 25-lap race going 1-2-3-5-6-7. Rory Catsimanes (31:02.54), Tyler Daillak (31:02.56) and Liam Miller (31:02.66) stoop on top of the podium at the end.

UC Irvine picked up 16 points in the women’s 3000m steeplechase going first and third. Kaia Schmidt (10:26.25) won the event, followed by UC San Diego’s Emma Dunmire (10:29.99) and Anna Soares (10:34.71). Cal Poly took the top five spots in the women’s 10000m with Kelli Gaffney (37:04.66), Nicole Bridges (37:04.74) and Ashlyn Leath (37:14.94) going 1-2-3.

Day two of the 2026 Big West Track & Field Championships main weekend will start with the men's javelin at 10 a.m. PT. Events on the track will start with the women's 4x100m relay at 2 p.m. PT
