SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The 35th-ranked UC Santa Barbara men’s tennis team’s season came to an end with a 4-2 loss to 15th-seeded and 17th-ranked San Diego in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship, Friday at Hogan Tennis Center.
The Gauchos end their season with an 18-8 overall record. UC Santa Barbara won a share of the conference’s regular-season crown with a 5-1 league mark and won the 2026 Big West Championship last weekend with a 4-0 decision in the title match over No. 2 seed UC Irvine.
The 15th-seeded and 17th-ranked Toreros will host the second-round match against UCLA on Saturday.
USD took the doubles point for a 1-0 advantage. Adrien Berrut and Lambert Ruland defeated
Miguel Avendano and
Lucca Liu 6-2 on court one. The Toreros clinched the point with a 6-4 decision on court three, Manvydas Balciunas and Vincent Marysko (USD) over
Diogo Morais and
Lorenzo Brunkow (UCSB). The No. 2 doubles match between
Conrad Brown and
Dominique Rolland (UCSB) versus Stian Klassen and Oliver Tarvet (USD) went unfinished with the Torero pair up 4-3.
The Toreros took a 2-0 lead after a 6-3, 6-1 decision on No. 6 singles as Berrut (USD) bested
Carson Lee (UCSB). UCSB was able to take a court back as Morais (UCSB) constructed a three-set comeback win on court No. 2 with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Balciunas (USD). Tarvet (USD) bested Liu (UCSD) at the top of the lineup 6-3, 6-4 to give San Diego a 3-1 edge.
The Gauchos closed the gap back to one with Avendano taking a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory on court No. 4 over Marysko. The Toreros clinched the match on court No. 5 as Ruland (USD) downed
Charlie Underwood (UCSB) 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
The No. 3 singles match between Klassen (USD) and Rolland (UCSB) went unfinished with Klassen up 5-2 in the third set.
