Dominique Rolland was eliminated in the opening matchup of the national singles tourney.
Liu bested Ratiu in comeback fashion. After falling in the first frame 3-6, the senior from Curitiba, Brazil forced a third set with a 7-5 second-stanza win. Liu won the third set via tiebreaker, 7-6 (4). The two-time All-Big West singles honoree will advance to the round of 32 to face No. 9-16 seed Paul Inchauspe of Princeton, Wednesday at noon ET/9 a.m. PT.
Rolland fell to No. 6 seed Kenta Miyoshi of Illinois 6-4, 6-1 in the round of 64.
