ORLANDO -- UC Santa Barbara senior Lucca Liu defeated North Carolina’s Niels Ratiu in three sets in the round of 64 to highlight The Big West's efforts on the first day of the 2025 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship, Tuesday at USTA Main Campus. Fellow Gaucho senior Dominique Rolland was eliminated in the opening matchup of the national singles tourney. 

Liu bested Ratiu in comeback fashion. After falling in the first frame 3-6, the senior from Curitiba, Brazil forced a third set with a 7-5 second-stanza win. Liu won the third set via tiebreaker, 7-6 (4). The two-time All-Big West singles honoree will advance to the round of 32 to face No. 9-16 seed Paul Inchauspe of Princeton, Wednesday at noon ET/9 a.m. PT. 

Rolland fell to No. 6 seed Kenta Miyoshi of Illinois 6-4, 6-1 in the round of 64.
