Big West Champion UC Irvine Headed to Denver for First Round of NCAA Championship

Big West champion UC Irvine will travel to and face University of Denver in the first round of the 2025 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship on Thursday, Nov. 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT from University of Denver Soccer Stadium in Denver, Colo. The winner of the opening-round matchup in the Mile High City will travel to and face No. 8 seed Portland (13-1-3) in the round of 32 on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. PT. The 48-team field for the national tournament was announced Monday via a selection show on NCAA.com.

UC Irvine (11-3-6) earned the conference’s automatic berth after capturing its fourth-ever Big West Championship title with a 2-1 triumph over top-seeded and host UC Santa Barbara in the final. The Anteaters defeated No. 3 seed Cal Poly in the semifinals, 1-0. UC Irvine finished the regular season as Big West tri-champions with a 4-0-5 conference record.  

The Anteaters will be making their eighth overall appearance in the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship and third under ninth-year head coach Yossi Raz. UC Irvine holds a 4-7-1 record in the national tournament, highlighted by back-to-back Sweet 16 runs in 2013 and 2014. 

Denver (11-7-2) won its conference’s automatic qualifier into the NCAA field after defeating Kansas City 4-2 in the Summit League Championship final. The Pioneers were Summit League co-regular season champions with a 4-1-1 mark in conference play. 

Portland (13-1-3) finished second in the West Coast Conference with a 6-1-2 league mark. The Pilots were ranked No. 6 nationally in the latest iteration of the United Soccer Coaches poll on Nov. 11. 

The 2025 NCAA Men's Soccer College Cup is scheduled for Dec. 12 and 15 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
