Big West Champion UC Irvine’s Season Comes to an End at Denver

UC Irvine’s 2025 campaign came to an end in the first round of the 2025 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship with a 2-0 loss to Denver, Thursday at University of Denver Soccer Stadium. 

The Anteaters finish their season with an 11-4-6 overall record and also saw their program-record 11 match unbeaten streak come to an end. UC Irvine had a successful season, being crowned The Big West regular-season tri-champions and Championship winners. Head coach Yossi Raz was named Big West Coach of the Year and four Anteaters were named All-Big West, three on the First Team. 

The Pioneers improve to 12-7-2 overall and will face No. 8 seed Portland (13-1-3) on Sunday. 

UC Irvine had an 11-5 shot advantage in 90 minutes of play, but only two of the Anteater shots were on goal. Meanwhile, three of the Pioneers’ shots were on target out of five overall. 
UC Irvine controlled the first half with five attempted shots to Denver’s two, and had the corner kick advantage, 3-2. Neither team could find the back of the net as the score was even, 0-0, at halftime.  

The Anteaters had a 6-3 shot-advantage in the latter 45 minutes of the game, but the Pioneers put all three on target, with two going in in the final 20 minutes. Kyle McGowan netted the first goal in the 71st minute and Luke Schultz hit the second score, a little over three minutes later, for Denver. 

Isaiah Powell, Brady Treinen, Braden Ferreira and Marcus Lee had two shots each to lead the Anteaters. Powell and Ferreira had the two shots on goal for UCI.
