The U.S. Paralympic roster for the 2024 games in Paris include five athletes with connections to The Big West, representing four member-institutions.
Headlining the group and making a fifth appearance in the Paralympic Games is Team USA sitting volleyball player Katie Holloway Bridge. The four-time medalist has two silvers (2008, ’12) and two golds (’16, ’20) in the trophy case and is vying for a fifth medal with Team USA. The decorated Paralympian and CSUN alumna was named MVP of the 2024 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. While a Matador, Holloway Bridge was an All-Big West performer on the women’s basketball court.
A pair of Big West alumni will take to the Para Triathlon while in Paris: Cal Poly’s Mark Barr and Zach Goodman of UC San Diego. While a first appearance for Goodman, this marks Barr’s fourth Paralympics. A collegiate swimmer for the Mustangs, Barr competed in swimming disciplines in 2004 and ’08, while transitioning to the Para Triathlon in 2016. Goodman serves as a guide for visually impaired para triathlete Kyle Coon.
Another set of Big West alumni are set to compete in Para Cycling with Bryan Larsen of UC Irvine and CSUN’s Jamie Whitmore Cardenas up in the saddle. Larsen will be making a first appearance in the Paralympic Games, specializing in track individual pursuit. Whitmore Cardenas competed as a track & field and cross country distance runner while a Matador, and is making a third go at the podium after winning gold and bronze in 2016 and also competing in the 2020 Tokyo Games.
"We are filled with pride to unveil the Team USA athletes who will represent the United States at the Paralympic Games in Paris this summer," USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland said upon the announcement of the rosters. "Their journey to the pinnacle of their careers is a testament to their unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence — attributes shared by our community of national governing bodies, coaches, families and USOPC staff who strive to help them achieve. We've seen what Paris has to offer the athletes of the world as they compete, and the fans of sport who celebrate the very best in elite competition. Now we eagerly anticipate the extraordinary moments and awe-inspiring Paralympic competition that lies ahead, and we can't wait for Team USA to show the world what they can do."
