As Hispanic Heritage Month draws to a close, The Big West reflects on the celebrations and recognitions held across the conference.
National Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15, honoring the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. The month begins on September 15—a date tied to the independence of several Latin American nations, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua—and coincides with key milestones like Mexico’s independence on September 16, Chile’s on September 18, and Belize’s on September 21.
Hispanic/Latino student-athletes continue to make a meaningful impact both on the field and in the classroom, with NCAA participation growing by 70% over the past decade. The Big West proudly includes ten Hispanic-Serving Institutions—Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, and UC Santa Barbara—demonstrating a shared commitment to access and opportunity for Hispanic students and communities.
Throughout the month, member schools hosted cultural events, educational programs, and community outreach initiatives to honor rich traditions, artistic expressions, and achievements. By celebrating the diverse backgrounds of its athletes, coaches, and staff, The Big West continues to champion inclusivity, unity, and a vibrant heritage that strengthens both athletics and education.
