UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine are set to trek on their roads to Omaha by receiving bids into the 2024 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, as announced on Memorial Day morning Monday live on ESPN2. It is the first time since 2017 that The Big West has had multiple teams into the national tournament.
UC Santa Barbara (42-12),
announced as one of 16 regional hosts Sunday night, received the No. 14 seed and will host Fresno State (33-27) to open the tournament. The game will be played Friday, May 31 at 6 p.m. PT and streamed on ESPN+. The Gauchos are an automatic qualifier after winning The Big West title with a 26-4 conference mark and went 16-8 in its non-conference schedule for a 42-12 overall record. UCSB will look to ride its 14-game win streak and undefeated record (25-0) at home into the NCAA postseason. The Bulldogs are an automatic qualifier after winning the Mountain West Tournament as its fourth-seeded team.
The regional also features Oregon (37-18) and San Diego (40-13). The Ducks finished third in the PAC-12 regular season, while the Toreros are an automatic qualifier after winning the West Coast Conference Tournament as its top seed and regular season champion.
UCSB is back in the NCAA postseason for the fourth time in the last five occasions the championship was held (2019, 2021, 2022, 2024). It is the first time a regional will be hosted at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. In 2015, UC Santa Barbara was the chosen as a host of a regional site that was played a four-hour drive off campus in Lake Elsinore. The last Big West team to host a regional was Long Beach State in 2017. Cal State Fullerton was a super regional site in 2018.
The winner of the Santa Barbara Regional is matched up for a Super Regional with the victor of the College Station Regional, which consists of No. 3 national seed Texas A&M (44-13), Grambling (26-26), Louisiana (40-18) and Texas (35-22).
UC Irvine received an at-large bid to make a return to the national postseason for the first time since 2021. The Anteaters were placed in the Corvallis Regional, hosted by No. 15 national seed Oregon State (42-14). UC Irvine finished second in The Big West race with a 22-8 conference mark and went 21-4 in its non-conference slate. It is the 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament (2004, 2006-11, 2014, 2021, 2024) for the UCI program.
The Anteaters will face Nicholls (38-20) to open the NCAA Tournament, Friday, May 31, at 1 p.m. PT on ESPN+. The Colonels are an automatic qualifier after winning the Southland Conference Tournament as its second seed. Oregon State will host Tulane on the other side of the bracket. The Beavers finished second in the PAC-12 regular season, while the Green Wave is an automatic qualifier after winning the American Athletic Conference Tournament as its third seed.
The winner of the Corvallis Regional is matched up for a Super Regional with the victor of the Lexington Regional, which consists of No. 2 national seed Kentucky (40-14), Indiana State (42-13), Illinois (34-19) and Western Michigan (32-21).
