FAYETVILLE, Ark. -- Thirteen student-athletes from The Big West competed across 10 events on the second day of the 2024 NCAA West Preliminaries, Wednesday at Arkansas’s John McDonnell Field.
The second day of the West Preliminaries is treated as the first round of the national championships for women’s events, mirroring the men's format on Wednesday. For track events, the competition is narrowed down to 24 athletes that qualify for Saturday’s national quarterfinal. For the field events, the top 12 advance to the national meet in two weeks in Eugene, Ore.
The Big West had one athlete advance out of the first round and one qualifier to the NCAA Championships.
UC Davis sophomore
Dani Barrett earned a ticket to Eugene by placing sixth in the 10000m, crossing the finish line in 34:11.32. The last Big West national qualifier in the 10000m was Sarah Sumpter of UC Davis in 2012.
Long Beach State senior
Hailey Fune’ advanced to Friday’s 100m hurdles quarterfinals by finishing third in heat one, 14th overall, with a personal-best time of 13.21. Cal State Fullerton junior
Jahzara Davis (13.63) came in 37th overall and Long Beach State junior Rahni Turner did not start.

Lexi Evans was 19th in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.20m/13’9.25”.
Long Beach State junior
Rori Denness-Lamont was 25th in the javelin with a throw of 48.34m/158’7”.
Long Beach State sophomore
Giszelle Hrehor placed 26th in the hammer throw with a mark of 57.08m/187’3”.
Long Beach State junior
Sofia Lavreshina was 27th overall in the 400m hurdles with a lifetime-best finish of 58.97.
In the 200m, UC Riverside sophomore
Raykiyat Olukoju ran a personal-best time of 23.34 to place 36th overall. Cal Poly senior Shelby Daniele was 43rd, crossing the line in 23.65.
UC Davis junior
Maddie Kackley took 36th overall in the 1500m with a 4:27.47 effort.
Cal Poly junior
Melody Nwagwu (5.87m/19’3.25”) finished 42nd in the long jump.
UC Irvine senior
Deandra Tyler was 43rd in the shot put with a toss of 14.86m/48’9”.
