INDIANAPOLIS – 2024 Big West Men’s Golf Champion Long Beach State and individual medalist Tegan Andrews of Cal State Fullerton learned their next destination for the 2024 Division I Men’s Golf Championship regionals, announced today on The Golf Channel.
The Beach is set to take on the field at the Chapel Hill Regional from May 13-15 at UNC Finley Golf Course, drawing the No. 9 seed in the 13-team regional. LBSU earned automatic entry into the regionals after claiming back-to-back titles at La Quinta Country Club, using a second-half surge in Tuesday’s final round to secure the four-stroke victory.
Long Beach State was paced by individual runner-up in senior Caly Seeber and the team finished with three student-athletes in the top 10 as Steen Zeman finished sixth and Charlie Forster closed in a tie for eighth.
LBSU will be making a seventh appearance in a regional field, including a third selection in the last four seasons. Long Beach State’s highest regional finish is eighth, recorded in their first national postseason appearance in 1974 and also in 2012.
Host North Carolina, winner of the ACC automatic berth is the top seed in the Chapel Hill Regional. In addition to UNC and Long Beach State, seeded 9th at the regional, the other teams teeing off at Finley Golf Club are No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia Tech, Southern Conference automatic qualifier No. 4 East Tennessee State, Big Ten automatic qualifier No. 5 Northwestern, No. 6 Baylor, A-10 automatic qualifier No. 7 VCU, No. 8 LMU, No. 10 Clemson, No. 11 Michigan State, Mid-American automatic qualifier No. 12 Ball State and NEC automatic qualifier No. 13 Howard.
Playing closer to home, Cal State Fullerton senior Tegan Andrews is one of five individuals set to tee off in the Rancho Santa Fe Regional. The Agoura Hills, Calif., native will take on the course at The Farms Golf Club in the region hosted by San Diego. Andrews is the second-seeded individual in the region, joined by Pepperdine trio No. 1 Mahanth Chirravuri, No. 3 William Walsh and No. 4 Brady Siravo, along with No. 5 Kevin Li of Seattle U.
Andrews earned a place at the regional after winning The Big West’s individual crown with the lowest three-round Championship total since 2006. Andrews put together rounds of 63, 73 and 66 to earn a four-stroke win over Seeber, with a 14-under 202. The first-round 63 matches a Titans’ single-round scoring record.
In order to advance to the national championship field, Andrews will need to be the top individual finisher not on an advancing team.
A strength-of-field metric is built into selections to ensure maximum balance and fairness at the six regional sites which feature 396 student-athletes competing. Thirty teams will advance to the final championship finals — five from each of the six regional sites. The top individual finisher not on an advancing team will also move on to compete for an individual national title.
The 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships will be May 24-29 at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., hosted by Texas following the women’s championship event. Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the 72-hole stroke-play individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a match play bracket to determine the national champion. The final three days of the championships will be televised live by the Golf Channel.
