Long Beach State Claims Back-to-Back Men's Golf Championship Titles

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Surging to the finish, Long Beach State claimed back-to-back Big West Championships on Tuesday afternoon at La Quinta Country Club.

The Beach earn The Big West's automatic bid to the 2024 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships regional field. Their region and destination will be announced tomorrow, May 1, at 11 a.m. PT on the Golf Channel. The conference trophy is the fifth for the program (1973, 2004, 21, 23, 24) and the third in the last four seasons.

Long Beach State entered the day with a three stroke lead. However, second-place finisher Cal State Fullerton had boosted themselves onto the top line by the 11th hole with 14 birdies and an eagle as the team was a combined 6-under at that time. Defending champion LBSU was able to finish out the final seven holes at even par while the Titans went six-over during the span to regain the lead and earn the win.

The Beach was paced by individual runner-up Clay Seeber who fired off a 3-under 69 in the final round. The senior from Newport Beach, Calif., closed the Championship with a three-round total of 10-under 206. Seeber was joined in the top 10 by junior duo Steen Zeman (6th; -3) and Charlie Forster (t-8th; E) to help the squad to the team title.

Individual medalist honors go to Cal State Fullerton senior Tegan Andrews. The wire-to-wire winner posted round of 63, 73, and 66 to finish at 14-under 202 for the four stroke lead. Andrews will earn an individual exemption into the NCAA Regionals, also announced during tomorrow's selection show.

Andrews' impressive tally is the lowest three-round medalist score in The Big West Championship since 2006, when Long Beach State's Ryan Panichpakdee fired a three-round total of 200 at Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.

Cal State Fullerton capped the Championship at 10-under 854 in the aggregate scoring with Cal Poly also finishing with a red number at 2-under 862 to round out the top three squads. The Mustang duo of Joey Zambri and Baron Szeto tied for fourth on the leaderboard to pick up All-Tournament Team honors.

Rounding out the top five individuals was UC Irvine's Rei Harashima, co-leader heading into the final 18 holes of action. The sophomore from Chula Vista, Calf., carded a final round 71 to land in third individually and pace the Anteaters to a fourth-place team finish.
