IRVINE, Calif. - The Big West had another eight student-athletes taken as the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft finished Tuesday with 10 rounds and 300 more picks.
The day’s haul gives The Big West 16 draftees this week, with eight selections in rounds three through 10 on Monday, after 19 a year ago.
True junior left-handed Cal State Fullerton closer
Jojo Ingrassia was Tuesday’s first Big West representative to move off the board, going to the Boston Red Sox in the 14th round at No. 418 overall. The El Cajon native and first-year Titan who transferred from San Diego State, tied for third in the conference with seven saves this season, going 5-2 with a 2.42 ERA and 51 strikeouts over a team-high 26 stints and 44.2 innings.
Ingrassia’s Fullerton teammate, catcher
Cole Urman, was chosen by the Baltimore Orioles in the 16th round (No. 481). The fourth-year junior hit .270 (50-for-185) with 30 runs, nine doubles, four home runs, 30 RBI, 11 walks and three steals over 49 games played. Defensively, the backstop produced a .995 fielding percentage, getting charged with only four passed balls and two errors over 426 chances while throwing out 12 of 32 would-be base-stealers (.375).
Also in the 16th round, UC Santa Barbara right-hander
Sam Whiting was the San Diego Padres’ pick at No. 491 overall. The fourth-year junior and product of Sloughhouse was second on the Gauchos with 24 pitching appearances and was on the mound at the end of seven contests. Whiting went 4-0 with a 4.10 ERA, one save, 36 strikeouts and zero home runs allowed over 26.1 innings of work.
The Padres went for another Big West prospect in the 18th round, nabbing Hawai’i southpaw
Harry Gustin with the 551st overall selection. The product of Aurora, Colo., a third-year sophomore, took over the Friday role for the Rainbow Warriors and posted a 5-3 win-loss record with a 3.14 ERA, three combined shutouts and 79 strikeouts over 77.1 innings and 15 appearances, all but one of them starts.
Three picks later to close the 18th round, Cal Poly right-handed pitcher
Derek True went to the Houston Astros. The fourth-year junior from Carpinteria was 1-3 with a 3.90 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 32.1 innings and 17 relief outings. True is now an MLB draftee for a second year running, having been picked in the 20th round (No. 604) in 2022 before opting to return to the Mustangs for another season of college baseball.
The Chicago White Sox made Fullerton outfielder
Caden Connor their 19th-round choice (No. 569). The fourth-year junior out of Anaheim Hills native appeared in all 56 games in 2023, batting .330 (74-for-224) and slugging .504 from the left side with 37 runs, 20 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 45 RBI and 32 walks.
CSUN catcher
Graysen Tarlow was grabbed up by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 19th round (No. 575). The third-year sophomore from Orange drew 47 starts among 49 games played and batted .311 with 42 runs, 12 doubles, three home runs, 41 RBI and nine steals. Tarlow fielded .983 and cut down nine of 22 would-be base-stealers.
Finally, Cal Poly right-hander
Bryce Warrecker was the third-to-last selection, No. 612 overall in the 20th round to the New York Yankees. The 6-foot-8 true junior out of Santa Barbara went 3-7 with a 4.89 ERA, drawing a team-best 14 starts among 16 appearances in all. Warrecker also paced the Mustangs in innings (81.0) and strikeouts (77), and threw the program’s lone complete game in 2023 at UC Davis on May 5.
Gustin was voted by league coaches to the 2023 All-Big West First Team, with Connor and Ingrassia both making the second squad. Urman had picked up an honorable mention for the second time after an earlier one for the 2021 campaign. Connor was a repeat second-teamer from 2022 following an honorable mention in 2021.
Of The Big West’s 16 picks, Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State led the way with four and three, respectively. They were followed by Cal Poly, CSUN and UC Santa Barbara at two apiece. Hawai’i, UC Davis and UC Irvine had one each. This was the third straight edition of the draft with a shortened 20 rounds, after only five were conducted for the pandemic-effected 2020 event. The Big West had 17 selections in 2021.
At least three Big West baseball players signed free agent professional contracts following the conclusion of the draft, in five-year UC San Diego right-handed pitcher
Michael Mitchell (Arizona Diamondbacks), true junior CSUN righty
Ryan Wentz (San Diego Padres), and fourth-year junior UC Irvine reliever
Jacob King (Minnesota Twins).
