NORMAN, Okla. – Ian Gilligan earned honors as a NCAA Division I PING All-Region performer, announced today by the GCAA. Gilligan, the 2023 Big West Golfer of the Year, is one of 25 men representing the West Region.
Ranked No. 14 nationally in the latest NCAA Division I GolfStat listings, Gilligan averaged an impressive 68.88 strokes per round in 11 tournaments in the 2022-23 season. The average is good for the Long Beach State modern history program record.Gilligan is the first Beach golfer to average under 70 strokes per round over the course of the year since the 1993-94 season.
Already etched in the record books for individual tournament performances, Gilligan now has the low round in modern history after firing a 61 at the John Burns Intercollegiate, and is twice tied for low 54-hole total of 199, recorded at the season-opening Nick Watney Invitational and matched at the John Burns Intercollegiate.
The Long Beach State sophomore finished in the top 10 in nine events, claiming the top line four times. In the 2023 Big West Championships, Gilligan won a one-hole playoff to best the field as the Beach also claimed the team trophy from La Quinta Country Club.
In the Las Vegas regional of the 2023 NCAA Division I Championships, Gilligan compiled a 13-under 203 to finished tied for ninth, narrowly missing out on advancing to the finals.
In between the two collegiate postseason events, the Reno, Nev., native advanced out of local qualifying for the UC Open, firing a 6-under 66 to top the field at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. Gilligan will next compete in the UC Open final qualifying round set for June 5.
