 2022 Rewind
The Cal State Fullerton men and Long Beach State women won the team titles at the 2022 Big West Track & Field Championships, hosted by UC Davis. The Titan men scored 200 points to take home the gold, making it two team titles in a row and four of the last five, dating back to 2017 (The Big West Championships was not held in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic). Long Beach State took second with 173.5 points and UC Santa Barbara was third with 140.5 points. The Beach women scored 134 points for the win. It was their second team title overall and first since 2018. Hawai’i was the runner-up with 108 points and UC Irvine took third with 101 points.

UC Santa Barbara’s Brian Schulz was the Men’s Track Athlete of the Meet after his double gold in the 5000 (14:26.97)  and 10000 (30:45.27). Long Beach State’s Jason Smith was the Men’s Field Athlete of the Meet after wins in the long jump (7.75m/25’5.75”), triple jump (15.54m/51’0”) and high jump (2.11m/6’11”). Marlene Gutierrez of UC Davis was named the Women’s Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the hammer throw (60.57m/198’8”) and shot put (15.06m/49’5”). By winning the 3000 steeple (10:23.14) and 800 (2:09.00), Long Beach State’s Ryley Fick earned the Women’s Track Athlete of the Meet.

Hawai’i’s Alyssa Mae Antolin and Long Beach State’s Ryley Fick were both named Women’s Co-Track Athlete of the Year. CSU Bakersfield’s Miranda Miller was the Women’s Field Athlete of the Year and UC Riverside’s Linda Perez claimed the Women’s Freshman of the Year honor. Long Beach State’s Andy Sythe won the Women’s Coach of the Year. For the second year in a row, Cal State Fullerton’s Charles Kelly took home the Men’s Track Athlete of the Year award. Long Beach State’s Jason Smith was the Men’s Field Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season, third time overall. Cal State Fullerton’s Alonzo Floriolli won Men’s Freshman of the Year and Titan head coach Marques Barosso was named the Men’s Coach of the Year.

The Big West had two individuals in three events at the NCAA Championships. UC Irvine’s Josh Farmer came in 14th place in the decathlon with 7159 points. It was Farmer’s second consecutive All-America Second Team honor. Long Beach State’s Jason Smith placed 13th in the triple jump with a mark of 15.91m/52’2.5”, garnering All-America Second Team accolades. The senior also took 13th place in the long jump  with a mark of 7.52m/24’8.25”, earning All-America status in that event as well. Smith closed out a decorated collegiate career with a toal of seven All-America plaques (2018 outdoor long jump, 2020 indoor long jump, 2020 indoor high jump, 2021 outdoor long jump, 2021 outdoor high jump, 2022 outdoor long jump and 2022 outdoor triple jump).
