FINAL RESULTS
Cal Poly captured its first Big West Women’s Track and Field Championship, scoring a total of 181.5 points over three days at UC Irvine’s Anteater Stadium. The winning score is the highest at the championship since 2015.
The Mustangs won six of 21 events overall, including three on Saturday.
Molly Ross earned a share of the 100-meter hurdles title with CSUN’s
Brisa Guzman-Sanchez as both crossed the line in 13.75 seconds.
Anisa Rind took home gold in the 400 meters with a time of 56.36 seconds. The Mustangs picked up 26 important points in the event, controlling the top three spots as well as seventh place.
Cal Poly also closed the meet with the program’s first title in the 4x400 relay as the quartet of Ross,
Cassidy Hubert,
Julianna Ruotolo and Rind finished in 3:48.48.
Cal State Fullerton came in second place with 149.5 points.
Maya Occiano collected gold in the 400 meter hurdles after posting a time of 60:08. She is the first Titan since 2016 to win the event.
UC Santa Barbara finished third with 130.5 points, highlighted by
Astrid Rosvall’s double in the 800 and 1500 meters. She became the first Gaucho in win both events at the conference meet. Rosvall outkicked reigning champion
Samantha Huerta of Cal State Fullerton in both races, finishing in 2:04.94 in the 800 and 4:20.11 in the 1500.
The Gauchos enjoyed further success in the distance races as
Katie Camarena took first in the 5,000 meters. Camarena blazed to the second-fastest winning time in Big West meet history – and the No. 9 mark on UCSB’s all-time list – going 16:29.57.
Host UC Irvine had a solid meet with 123 points and a fourth place showing. The Anteaters won four events on Saturday, including a double from
Kayla Richardson. Richardson joined Desiree Bracey (1991) as the only two ‘Eaters to win both the 100 and 200 meters. She posted the No. 2 time (11.65) in UCI history to win the 100 and came back to grab the 200 in 24.11 seconds.
UCI began the afternoon with a victory in the 4x100 relay as
Natalie Koppel, Richardson,
Mia Marquez and
Aryel Coats ran the race in 46.57 seconds – marking the program’s third win in the event all-time.
Brianna Villanueva also picked up a win for the ‘Eaters as her throw of 165 feet, 3 inches roped in the win. It was the third year in a row a UCI individual took gold in the event.
UC Davis finished in fifth place with 73 points, followed by Long Beach State and Hawai‘i in a tie for sixth with 51 apiece. CSUN (26), UC Riverside (18) and CSU Bakersfield (11.5) rounded out the standings.
The Beach earned one event win on Saturday as
Crystal Washington had the top mark in the triple jump (40-06.00). She became LBSU’s first triple jump champion since 2008.
UCI’s Richardson and Villanueva were named the Big West Track and Field Athletes of the Meet, respectively.
Next up for the Big West is the NCAA West Preliminary Round, which will take place from May 26-29 at Texas A&M. The field, comprised of Top 48 individuals per event west of Mississippi, will be announced on Thursday, May 20 at 10 a.m. PT on NCAA.com.
