Pete Fernandez and Andrea Wong helped their squads earn tournament team titles in addition to winning individual medalist honors, propelling them to Big West Golfer of the Month accolades in March.
UC Irvine’s Fernandez Wins Second Career Tournament
UC Irvine senior Pete Fernandez (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale HS) won his second career collegiate tournament in emphatic fashion as he received Big West Men’s Golfer of the Month praise for March.
Fernandez set a school record for largest margin of victory as medalist at the 19th Del Walker Intercollegiate Golf Classic. His 8-under par total of 202 was six shots better than the second place finishers and he helped UC Irvine to a nine shot victory. Fernandez began his assault on the 6,562-yard Virginia Country Club course with an opening round 7-under 63. He followed with rounds of 69 and 70 to polish off his first tournament championship since winning the Anteater Invitational in January 2014.
Later in the month, Fernandez led UC Irvine at the Lamkin Grip Cal Poly Challenge, a match play tournament featuring eight teams at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande. The Anteaters defeated the Cal Poly “A” and “B” teams, as well as UC Santa Barbara, en route to their second tournament title in March. Fernandez posted a 2-1 match record for the tournament, defeating Cal Poly’s Camden Price, 1 Up in the final to help the Anteaters to a 4-1 victory.

Wong Leads UC Davis To Anuenue Spring Break Classic Title
UC Davis junior Andrea Wong (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prep) was named the Big West Women’s Golfer of the Month for March as she secured individual medalist honors at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic.
Wong’s 54-hole total of 7-under par 209 led her to a three-shot victory over teammate Paige Lee as the Aggies also won the team title by eight strokes, beating out six other ranked squads.
Wong shot under par in all three rounds, including a second round 68 that represented her second-lowest score of the 2014-15 season. Along with her 68, Wong’s final round 70 represented the Aggies’ best score in each of the final two rounds. Wong posted 11 birdies and an eagle in the event. The No. 32 Aggies were the only team to complete the tournament on Maui under par.
Earlier in the month at the Bay Area Intercollegiate in Fairfax, Calif., Wong tied for 12th with a 2-over 54-hole total of 215 (70-73-72). She carded the tournament’s top score in the first round, and helped the Aggies to a third place finish among the 13 participating teams.
