Three Big West Athletes Qualify For NCAA Finals

Long Beach State sophomores Willie Alexander and Chris Enriquez joined UC Riverside senior Ted Hooper as Big West representatives for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship as all three posted top-12 finishes during the NCAA West Preliminary Thursday in Fayetteville, Ark.

The NCAA Championships will be held in Eugene, Ore, June 11-14.

UCR's Ted Hooper will be joined by LBSU's Chris Enriquez & Willie Alexander at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, OregonHooper and Alexander qualified for the national meet for the second straight year in the long jump.  Hooper finished second overall as he cleared 25-3.25 on his first jump.  Alexander, who had the top mark in Flight 3, came in third overall at 25.2.75.

Enriquez posted a time of 29:33.74 to place fifth overall in the 10,000-meters.  He outdistanced Cal Poly senior Sean Davidson, the Big West champion in the event.  Davidson ran 29:43.73 to finish 15th overall and missed punching his ticket to Eugene by 2.43 seconds.

In addition, six other athletes kept alive their quest for a berth in the NCAA Championship, advancing out of the first round and into the quarterfinals.  Two UC Davis men and three women made up that group, along with Long Beach State 800-meter specialist Chris Low.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Aggie senior Karl Moran finished 10th overall and third in his heat in a personal-best 51.03 seconds.  He improved upon his previous mark of 51.95 from earlier this season.

Junior Raquel Lambdin was the next advancing Aggie as she finished fifth in the final of four heats (sixth overall), clocking 4:22.08 in the 1,500.  Lambdin also bested her previous top mark by a second.

Ashley Marshall, the two-time Big West champion in the 100-meters, also moved on as the junior sprinted 11.50 in the third heat and finished seventh overall.

Junior Cekarri Nixon broke her own school record in the 400-meter dash as she claimed third place in her heat to automatically advance to the next round.  Nixon’s time of 53.26 was 15th overall.

UC Davis junior Nathan Strum joined 49er junior Low among the qualifiers for the 800-meter quarterfinals as both finished within a second of each other.  Strum clocked 1:50.05 – third in Heat 5 – and came in 15th overall, while Low won his heat in 1:50.97. 

Moran, Marshall, Nixon, Strum and Low will compete in Friday’s quarterfinals for the right to move on to Eugene, while Lambdin’s 1,500 quarterfinal will take place on Saturday.

Action continues on Friday at John McDonnell Field with a full slate of events.  The field events kick off the day with the men’s hammer at 8:00 a.m. (PDT) with Big West champion Caleb Stuart of UC Riverside participating in his second event of the NCAA West Preliminary. He finished 40th in the shot put Thursday.  Track competition begins at 3:00 p.m with seven Big West participants in the men’s 110-meter hurdles.
