While two 49ers earn honors this week, a Highlander takes the women’s track portion while a Titan receives the first recognition for Fullerton this season.
Daniel York-Mouton (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard High School) of Cal State Fullerton takes the Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 400-meter dash at the UCI Spring Break Invitational last weekend. With a time of 47.95, the freshman ranks second in the conference and 31st nationally while helping his team to a first-place finish at Anteater Stadium. York-Mouton also claimed the 10th-best time in league in the 200-meter race with a 21.94 finish.
Jasmine Askew (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch High School) represents the 49ers in the weekly awards after being named Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week. Askew ran the fastest 400-meters for Long Beach since 1987 with a time of 54.72 and ranks third all-time in program history after her finish at the Arizona State Baldy Castillo Invitational to take second place in the event. As a member of the 4x400m relay, Askew and her teammates ran LBSU’s first ever sub-3:40 relay to shatter the school record with a time of 3:39.65. The junior’s 54.0 split was the fastest split in the record-setting race.
For the second week in a row, UC Riverside senior Caleb Stuart (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly HS) notched Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. Stuart claimed the Highlander record in the hammer throw after smashing the previous UC Riverside record by 10 feet with a mark of 66.5m and now owns the third-best mark in the nation this season. Not only did Stuart claim the UCR record in the hammer throw at the UCI Spring Break Invitational, but beat his personal-best in the shot put by nearly three feet with a mark of 16.54m to take fourth at the Invitational.
As the second representative from Long Beach State this week, junior Tiffany Forbito (Oregon City, Ore./Clackamas Community College) threw for a 43.70m mark in the javelin throw at the UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational. Forbito’s mark ranks first in the Big West by over 11 feet and the junior now owns the 8th-best notch on the all-time list for the 49ers.
