A indication that top talent is spread out across the conference, four schools had representatives who received Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors for the second week in a row.
The Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week was Cal Poly senior Chris Frias (Ventura, Calif./Buena HS). He ran an 8:06.66 in the 3,000 meters to finish first at the Cal Poly/Fresno State dual meet. His time ranked No. 3 in school history.
For the second straight week, UC Davis junior All-American Ashley Marshall (Moreno Valley, Calif./Rancho Verde HS) claimed Women’s Track recognition. The sprinter finished first in three events – the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x100 relay – at the Aggie Open. Her time of 11.58 in the 100m is currently ranked No. 1 nationally, according to TFRRS. She also won the 200m in 24.05. In the 4x100 relay, Marshall ran the second leg and helped her team to a winning mark of 45.70, which is currently ranked No. 3 in the country.
UC Riverside senior Caleb Stuart (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly HS) notched Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors He won the hammer throw at the UC Riverside/UC Santa Barbara dual meet, with his launch traveling 208-03. The mark was five inches short of his school record set back in 2012, but also broke his meet record of 195-07 that he established in the 2012 campaign. His throw qualified him for the first round of the NCAA Championships in the hammer. Stuart also posted a mark of 51-2.25 to finish second in the shot put.
Kayla Kamaka (Roseville, Calif./Woodcreek HS) of Long Beach State scooped up the Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Week award. The senior established two lifetime bests on two separate tries in the pole vault at the Anteater 4-Way Meet. She cleared 12-10.75 on her second attempt to set a personal-best, but actually exceeded that effort on her first attempt, a mark of 13-1.5. She attempted a new school record of 13-5.75 but did not succeed at that height. Kamaka’s 13-1.5 mark ranks No. 2 in the NCAA, No. 1 in the Big West, and ties for second all-time at Long Beach State. She won the meet by over a foot. Kamaka redshirted the 2013 season due to a stress fracture in her foot.
