Track and Field Award Honorees Set Personal Bests

The Big West Track and Field Athlete of the Week winners combined for four first-place finishes and set three personal-bests as a smorgasbord of great performances took place across various meets.

Cal Poly junior John Guerrero (Galt, Calif./Atwater HS) notched Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Week honors as he established a personal-best in the 800 meters.  He ran a 1:49.79 to finish fourth at the Sacramento State Mondo Mid-Major Challenge.  The mark ranks first in the Big West, 17th in the West Region and 40th nationally.

The Men's Field Athlete of the Week was bestowed upon Long Beach State senior Christopher Yates (Lakewood, Calif./Golden West College).  He captured first place in both the shot put and hammer throw at the Big West Challenge Cup hosted by UC Irvine Friday.  Yates heaved 59-1.25 in the shot put to break his personal record by over two feet.  He won the hammer competition with a throw of 187-9 to fall just short of a personal-best.  The two first-place finishes was instrumental in helping the 49ers claim the Big West Challenge team title.  Yates now ranks No. 2 in the Big West in both events, while his shot put mark elevates him to No. 13 in the West Region.

For the third time this season, UC Davis junior Alycia Cridebring (Pleasant Hill, Calif./College Park HS) is the recipient of Women's Track Athlete of the Week accolades.  The star distance runner notched a personal-best time of 4:21.44 in the 1,500 at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge.  She finished second in the race and beat her previous PR of 4:23.75, boosting her to No. 2 on the Aggies' career leaders list.  She previously ranked No. 5 on that list.  In the 1,500, Cridebring ranks No. 1 in the Big West, No. 17 in the West Region and No. 37 nationally.

UC Irvine sophomore Itos Aikhionbare (Eagle Rock, Calif./La Salle HS) earned Women's Field Athlete of the Week recognition thanks to a pair of first-place performances in the Big West Challenge Cup.  The team's top thrower claimed the title in the shoaltt put and discus throw.  Aikhionbare sported a mark of 49-7.75 (15.13m) in the shot put and a toss of 158-7 (48.34m) in the discus to highlight the Anteater women's contingent.  She also placed sixth in the hammer throw with a mark of 153-1 (46.66m) to account for a total of 22 team points for UCI.  In addition, her discus throw ranks No. 4 in school history.
