UC Davis junior Alycia Cridebring and freshman Praise Adesida parlayed performances from the Aggie Open into Big West Female Track and Field Athlete of the Week recognition. Men's honors were divvied up by Cal Poly's Chris Frias as the Track Athlete of the Week and Long Beach State's Christopher Yates as Field Athlete of the Week.
Cridebring (Pleasant Hill, Calif./College Park HS) was one of nine Aggies to win events at the home opener meet. The junior ran a 16:30.85 in the 5,000 meters to earn the win at the Aggie Open. The time currently ranks No. 1 in the Big West and Division I, and just missed her personal record mark of 16:30.23 set last year.
Adesida (Martinez, Calif./Alhambra HS) made her home debut a memorable one in earning Field Athlete of the Week accolades. She won both the Aggie Open shot put and discus with throws that placed her on the UC Davis top 10 all-time list. Her heave of 44-11.00 (13.69m) in the shot put placed her at No. 7 on the program's all-time list. Meanwhile, her toss of 146-04 (44.61) in the discus puts her eighth on the UCD career list. Adesida ranks fifth in the Big West and 13th in Division I for the shot put, while discus mark ranks her second league-wide and 14th in D-I.
Frias (Ventura, Calif./Buena HS) picked up Men's Track Athlete of the Week honors after a winning effort in the 3,000 meters at the Cal Poly/Fresno State dual meet. The junior posted a 8:17.75 to outdistance teammate and second place finisher Sean Davidson by a narrow margin (8:19.44).
The Men's Field Athlete of the Week award went to Long Beach State's Yates (Lakewood, Calif./Golden West College), who set lifetime bests in the shot put and hammer throw at the Ben Brown Invitational. Yates threw a 191-6 in the hammer to finish in fifth place and break his personal record by 10 feet. In the shot put, he unloaded a toss of 55-0 to capture second place. In addition, his shot put toss ranks No. 2 in the Big West, West Region and nationally. LBSU's 2013 Co-Team Captain, Yates is blending back into shot put form after a broken index finger on his throwing hand preventing him from competing in the event in 2012.
