After competing at the Stanford Invitational, two track event runners from UC Davis took the votes as Johnathan Peterson and Sarah Sumpter both ranked nationally with their times and received the Big West Track Athlete’s of the Week honors.  In field events, UC Santa Barbara’s Derek Masterson and Barbara Nwaba took recognition this week for Big West Field Athlete’s of the Week.

Senior from Clovis, Calif., Peterson competed in the first section of the 10,000-meter recording a school record mark of 28:50.45.  Peterson passed Jeff Kaiser’s record set in 2000 of 29:26.54.  For his new record, Peterson was announced by TFRRS as ranked No. 4 nationally in Division I competition.  Teammate  Sumpter, of Cloverdale Calif. competed in the 10,000-meter as well, posting her own school record.  The junior finished with a time of 33:19.77, breaking her own personal record (34:28.84) set in 2010, as well as passing up Patti Gray who held the number one spot for her time in 1983 of 33:42.3.  Sumpter is ranked twelfth nationally in Division I competition.

The Gauchos performed in the field, led by Derek Masterson and his performance at the Sam Adams Invitational last week.  The Placerville, Calif. native scored a 7558 in the Decathlon, which automatically qualifies Masterson for the NCAA Championship, and ranks him sixth in the nation.  On the women’s side Nwaba competed in the heptathalon at the Invitational with a score of 5986, a new Big West Conference record and nationally recognized as No. 1.  The Los Angeles native also qualifies for an automatic spot in the NCAA Championships this season.
