Long Beach State had a solid weekend in the field events as Colin Dunbar and Tara Ross were named Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week and Women's Field Athlete of the Week, respectively. The other two awards went to Charles Jock of UC Irvine (Men's Track) and Ciara Short of Cal State Fullerton (Women's Track).
Dunbar, a senior from Santa Barbara, Calif., threw a personal best of 213-6 in the hammer at the USC Trojan Invitational to finish third. At the Aztec Invitational, his effort of 54-5.50 placed second in the shot put. Dunbar also threw 154-8 in the discus at the event. Ross, a senior from Mission Viejo, Calif., was the runner-up in the women’s javelin with a toss of 160-0 at the Aztec Invitational.
Jock, a junior from San Diego, Calif., won the 400 meters in a conference-leading 47.97 at the Spring Break Invitational Saturday. He also anchored the 4x400 relay that posted a time of 3:15.71 as he just missed (.13) overcoming a 30-meter lead by Cornell’s anchor on the final leg.
Short, a senior from San Diego, Calif., finished in first place in the 400 at the Trojan Invitational, crossing the finish line in 52.90. Her time is the best in the NCAA in her first outdoor competition of the 2011 season.
