The second day of the NCAA West Regional meet was a solid one for Big West athletes as five competitors moved on to the NCAA Championships following Friday events.
Charles Jock of UC Irvine had another impressive 800 race to seal a spot in the NCAA Championships, breaking his own school record with a time of 1:46.67. The effort won his heat and was the second-best showing in the field. UC Santa Barbara's Ryan Martin also achieved a spot in the NCAA field after he came in second in his heat with a time of 1:49.66.
Polly Gnepa of UC Davis achieved automatic qualification into the national quarterfinals of the 110 hurdles thanks to a second place finish in his heat at 13.86. His time was the eighth-best among those receiving auto bids into the next round.
Cal State Fullerton's Lauren Williams gave the league another competitor in the national quarterfinals with the 11th-best time among the top qualifiers in the 100 hurdles. She ran a 13.53 which was the second-best effort in her heat. The Titans also picked up a spot in the NCAA Championships in the women's 400 as Ciara Short won her heat in 52.78. Short also moved on to the quarterfinals of the 200, coming in second in her heat with a time of 23.62 which was 10th-best in the field.
Long Beach State's Kenneth Medwood followed up his impressive 400 hurdles race yesterday with another excellent showing that landed him a spot in the NCAA Championships. He finished third in his heat with an effort of 50.30, the eighth-best result in the race.
The next Big West athlete to move on was David Reid of Cal State Northridge who moved on to the quarterfinals of the 200 meter dash. Reid moved on thanks to a third place finish in his heat, completing the sprint in 21.24.
UC Santa Barbara's Julian deRubira set a school record in the steeple on his way to qualifying for the NCAA Championships, completing the race with the fourth-best time at 8:46.48.
