UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara each claimed a pair of Big West track & field honors this week, the next-to-last weekly honors that will go out prior to the Big West Championships.
The Aggies swept the track mentions as Jonathan Peterson won the men's honor, while the women's award went to Lauren Wallace. Similarly, the Gauchos took home both of the field accolades as Scott Finely and Irene Kujore won the men's and women's honors, respectively.
Peterson, a junior from Clovis, Calif., finished seventh in the mile with a time of 4:03.89 at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational hosted by California. The TFRRS descending order list shows a converted time of 3:45.82 for his effort, which would have been the second-best effort in school history.
Wallace, a sophomore from Ukiah, Calif., came away with a first place finish in the “B” section of the 800 at the Brutus Hamilton in 2:08.73. She also ran the leadoff leg of the 4x400 relay that finished fourth. Wallace’s 800 time is second-best in Aggie history and places her second in the Big West.
Finley, a senior from San Diego, Calif., had a record-breaking effort in the pole vault at the UCSD Trition Invitational. He put up an effort of 17-2.5 which broke the school record and moves him into first place on the Big West list. The mark is also 20th in the NCAA and 12th in the West Region.
Kujore, a sophomore from Hayward, Calif., won her second straight weekly accolade after a great effort at the UCSD Triton Invitational. She put up an effort of 49-7 in the shot put for second place overall, then finished in sixth in the discus with a toss of 168-11. Her shot put showing leads the conference by two feet and is second-best in Gaucho history.
