UC Santa Barbara's solid weekend at the Azusa Pacific Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays resulted in Athlete of the Week honors for three Gaucho athletes. Danielle Domenichelli won the Women's Track Athlete of the Week, while Michael Guerra and Irene Kujore claimed the Men's and Women's Field Athlete of the Week accolades, respectively. Kenneth Medwood of Long Beach State claimed the remaining award as the Men's Track Athlete of the Week.
Medwood, a native Los Angeles, Calif., put up record breaking performances at the Beach Invitational. The senior finished first in the 400 hurdles (50.37) and sixth in the 200 (21.49). Medwood's hurdles time broke a 24-year old school record, while also setting a new meet record in an event he won at the meet a year ago.
Domenichelli, who hails from El Dorado Hills, Calif., also put forth a record-setting effort during her time at the Mt. SAC Relays. The senior was 18th overall in the 5K at the meet, finishing with a time of 16:01.20. The time puts her tops in the Big West, 10th in the most recent NCAA rankings and is a new conference and school record by 11 seconds.
Guerra, a Modesto, Calif., native, put forth a big effort in the javelin at the Azusa Pacific Invitational. The junior recorded an effort of 219-07, giving him first place in the event. His toss moved him into first place in the Big West by 20 feet, is the third-best showing in UCSB history and ranks 32nd in the country.
Kujore, whose hometown is Hayward, Calif., put forth three impressive efforts at the Azusa Pacific Invitational. The sophomore recorded a pair of second place finishes at the meet, attaining that status in the discus (171-06) and shot put (48-11). She also recorded a 14th place result in the hammer (154-09). Kujore’s discus and shot put results are the best in the Big West, while the discus mark is 13th in NCAA and a new school record.
