Four different schools were honored with track & field weekly honors as the season kicked off with excellent performances around the Big West.
The Men's Track Athlete of the Week honor went to Joe Gatel of Cal Poly after a solid showing at the Stanford Opener. The senior standout ran the 3000 meters in 8:10.37, resulting in a first place finish and landing him in the top 10 in program history in the event.
Sirena Williams of UC Davis claimed the Women's Track Athlete of the Week accolade after a pair of strong finishes at the Stanford Opener. The native of Fresno, Calif., finished first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.09. The senior won the race by .22 of a second despite running into a -.07 headwind. Later facing a -1.1 headwind, Williams posted an effort of 12.87 in the 100.
On the field side of things, a pair of javelin throwers were in the spotlight as UC Santa Barbara's Michael Guerra came away with the Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor, while Long Beach State's Randi Hicks won the women's award.
Guerra, who hails from Modesto, Calif., came away with first place at the Ben Brown Invitational in the event after an impressive toss of 189-4. Meanwhile, Hicks set personal, Big West, school and meet records with her effort of 170-10. Her previous best was 152-5 and the previous Big West record, held by LBSU alum Kim Heinz, was 169-4.
