A busy track & field weekend resulted in four different schools claiming this week's edition of the Big West Track & Field weekly accolades.
On the track side of things, Charles Jock of UC Irvine claimed the Men's Athlete of the Week honor, while the women's weekly award went to Danielle Domenichelli of UC Santa Barbara and Brenda Martinez of UC Riverside.
Jock, a sophomore from San Diego, won the 800 at the Cal/Nevada Championships Sunday with a school-record time of 1:47.46, breaking a 32-year old record held by former Anteater legend Steve Scott. It is the best 800 time so far in the NCAA this season and delivered Jock his second consecutive conference weekly award.
Domenichelli, a senior from El Dorado Hills, finished in 11th in the section A 10K jaunt at the Stanford Invitational. She crossed the finish line 33:29.0, just shy of the school and conference records by six seconds.
Martinez, a senior from Rancho Cucamonga, won the 800 in stellar fashion at the ASU Invitational. She crossed the finish line in 2:04.76, the top time in the nation so far this season.
The field side of things saw the men's award go to Derek Cooper of Cal State Northridge, while Jane Doolittle of UC Santa Barbara came away with the women's honor.
Cooper, a senior from Las Vegas, Nev., won his second men’s field mention of the season after an impressive showing at the Cal/Nevada Championships. He scored 18 points thanks to a win in the shot put (58-0.50) and a second place showing in the discus (172-6).
Doolittle, a senior from Mountain View, Calif., won the high jump at the Cal/Nevada Championships with an effort of 6-0. The mark is tops in the conference and places her second in the country so far this season.
