Big West Track Opens April with Meets from California to Florida

The travel miles will be racked up this week for the Big West track programs as the eight schools are scheduled to be in meets in the California sunshine to the Lone Star State to the sunny skies of Florida.

Cal State Fullerton will log the most miles this weekend as the Titans are headed to Gainesville, Fla., for the Florida Relays hosted by the University of Florida. The event, which is running its 70th edition, is one of the premier track & field meets in the country, attracting top teams from all over the country. CSF will test its mettle Friday and Saturday on Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium.

Speaking of elite meets, head west from Florida and stop in Austin, Texas where the 82nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays are being held. Called one of the top track & field meets in the country, thousands of athletes from all levels will descend on Mike A. Myers Stadium where a capacity crowd awaits the competition. The Big West participants will come from Cal State Northridge and UC Irvine, looking to test themselves against national competition.

The rest of the Big West will remain within the borders of California with home and away meets.

Cal Poly will be the lone team hosting a meet as the Mustangs welcome a competitive field for the Cal Poly Invitational. Included in that field will be Big West and Central Coast rival UC Santa Barbara for the one day meet that will be held all day Saturday. Former Cal Poly alum and 2008 Olympic gold medalist Stephanie Brown Trafton will participate in the meet as well.

Meanwhile, Long Beach State, UC Davis and UC Riverside will all be traveling in-state to various locations for their meets this weekend.

The 49ers destination is Westwood for the UCLA Invitational, the Aggies will make a short trek to Sacramento for the Nike Invitational and the Highlanders are off to Claremont for the Pomona Pitzer Invitational.
