CSUN Honored with Two Big West Weekly Track Awards; CP and UCI also Nab Accolades

After an excellent weekend of competition at the Cal-Nevada Championships, Cal State Northridge claimed two of the weekly Big West track & field awards it was announced today. Two other schools also claimed individual honors as Cal Poly and UC Irvine came away with weekly all-stars.

The Matadors saw Sherrina Lofton and Reindell Cole claim the Women's Track Athlete of the Week and Men's Field Athlete of the Week, respectively.

Lofton, a junior from Fairfeld, Calif., finished first in both the 100 (11.57) and 200 (23.67) individual races and was a member of CSUN’s first place 4x100 relay team at the Cal-Nevada Championships. For her efforts, Lofton was named the Cal-Nevada Women's Track Athlete of the Meet. Meanwhile, Cole, a sophomore from Las Vegas, Nev., jumped a season-best 25-1.75 (7.60m) at the same meet, the second-best mark in the country. Cole also claimed the Men’s Field Athlete of the Meet for his performance.

The Mustang winner of a Big West track & field award went to Derek Thomas who claimed Men's Track Athlete of the Week. Thomas, a freshman from San Leandro, Calif., ran a 3:45.10 for second place in his section of the 1500 at Stanford Invitational, missing the overall win by .09. The true freshman’s time was an NCAA regional qualifier and the ninth-best 1500 result in Cal Poly history.

UCI's award 2009 haul continued with the selection of Alisha Misiaita as the Women's Field Athlete of the Week. Misiaita, a junior from San Diego, Calif., won the shot put at the Cal-Nevada Championships Sunday with a lifetime-best mark of 51-09 (15.79m). She broke her own school record of 50-08 that she set a year ago.
